Previous Blogs: 30 Minutes

A good nights sleep and a day in which to do nothing but play my extensive back catalogue. I feel I need to pursue my FFXIII experience further. Perhaps I was too harsh on it last night?

***Remember: SPOILERS!!***

Start Up

The first thing I notice upon loading my game is that it gives you a story synopsis of everything you’ve experienced so far. This scrolls up the screen at quite a pace, and can’t be stopped or rewound.

Most interestingly, I noted that I knew none of this. I’d picked up bits and pieces of what was going on from things Snow and Lightning said, but otherwise I was merely glossing through on an “Ok, so this is happening in some place to some people for some reasons I don’t yet know” kind of mind set.

I pretty sure I’m missing something here. I explore the in game menu, and find a tab marked “Datalog”. Inside is a veritable plethora of information regarding Pulse, Cocoon, the characters and the story so far. Hmm. I am most perturbed.

While I appreciate all this info being in one place, I would have preferred it to be explained in game! I sincerely hope it does, because I really don’t want to be going back and forth to the datalogs, reading pages of summary and explanations, just to keep track of wtf is happening in the story. That’s just lazy writing. But we’ll see.

Gameplay Time – 35 Minutes

Picking up where I left off with Snow and Co. Another long pathway of enemies to fight i.e. be defeated by X.

X X X X X X O! Nah just kidding, it was X again.

One pleasant surprise was to see exotic black haired chick IS still with us. I could have sworn she ran off to help the refugees. She’s an awesome fighter to watch, very sensual. She even has this sexy hip gyration when she uses a potion. Man, it’s a shame she won’t be around for long.

Ahem, moving on. Defeating more enemies with X, until I come across another Boss. It’s a giant dog thing with the head of Advent Children’s Bahamut and covered in armour. He’s pretty nasty… in the sense that I actually had to use one potion during the fight, inbetween pushing X.

How are these even considered boss fights? There’s no skill or strategy involved at all! Why can’t I target specific areas on my enemy? Like the armour, legs, head, chest. This combat at it’s most basic, watered down form. Impossible to lose, and assuming you keep pushing X, plays out exactly the same way every time. Even FFX’s combat entertained me more then this early on.

Another thing that’s bothering me about the combat that I haven’t mentioned yet: the ratings. Every fight has a rating. WHY do so many JRPG and J-Brawlers need a rating system? I mean, it’s nice I can achieve a 5 star rating just by pushing X, but what have they got planned further down the track? Are the super enemies not going to drop decent loot unless I get a high rating? No thanks. Most tough enemies I’m just glad to kill; I don’t want to have to worry about making it an A-1 perfect battle too. Hmph.

Gameplay Time – 45 Minutes

Around 10 minutes of cutscenes which, thankfully, did explain some of the stuff described in the Datalogs. Not very thoroughly, but it’ll do. This is interjected by another Boss-ish fight with Lightning and Sazh. This guy was mean. I had to use another potion.

Then it’s back to Snow for some more cutscenes and fighting.

Gameplay Time – 50 Minutes

We are now in control of some new team characters; Hope, the blonde boy who just watched his mother get owned, and Vanille, the red headed girl narrating the story. I already hate them both. Well, Hope hasn’t said much, but I know he’s going to be a whiny brat. Vanille… my god. Who ever wrote her dialogue needs a snap-kick to the head. I wonder if it’s possible to kill off team members? Where’s Sephiroth when you need him?

Another cutscene, and it’s time to explore the mysterious fal C’ie thing where Lightning and the others were headed.

Whoa. Hope has a Boomerang as a weapon. And Vanille’s wielding some weird staff that shoots out cutting wires. That’s pretty cool! Except wait, no, Vanille runs like an absolute spaz. Her list of annoyances is growing. What the hell kind of accent is her VA using anyway? It sounds like it’s trying to be… Australian? No way… can’t be. That’s just atrocious. We sound nothing like that. She sounds like an American chick speaking a mangled form of British/Aussie/Kiwi. I’m so appalled.

This is the first “Open” area we’ve been allowed to explore. The mini map clearly shows the layout, as well as enemy locations. This is handy. Another tutorial message has popped up explaining Aggressive and Preemptive strikes. Oh thank god! They do exist! In other words; approaching the enemy from behind will take them by surprise and result in their “stagger” bar being very high at the start of the battle. Attacking head on will just be a battle like any other.

Hmm. Something else about the battle system I actually like: thanks to the action queue system, if an enemy dies to one action, yet there are two more remaining in the queue, your character automatically jumps to the next closest enemy, without the queue resetting. Now that I like. Well, in the sense that if I have to put up with this form of combat, at least this is making it a little more streamlined and useful.

Gameplay Time – 1 Hour

Ah poo. I went the wrong way and hit a point of no return before I’d explored everything in the room. I HATE when that happens. Guess I’ll have to stop and reload, though now I’m to annoyed at how horrible Vanille is to play any more.

I’ll play something else and come back to it later.

New General Consensus?

This is going slow. Very slow. I mean most of the FF’s are slow to begin, but they’re punctuated by tons of exploration, talking opportunities or side quests. Even before the main story starts.

It’s not great when a game fails to maintain my attention for more then 30 minutes at a time (I’m not just doing so for this blogs sake, I’m genuinely getting tired and in need of a break). I blame it mainly on the combat… and the fact that I don’t like the characters… and that I still feel like I have no real idea what’s going on or why, even after reading the Datalogs.

Urgh. Probably just my general impatience. A break and a different game might allow for a more optimistic outlook when I come back. I hope.

The first hour or so didn't maintain my attention either; mostly because I'd already seen it in the gameplay trailer. Once Serah comes into the picture and you start seeing all the characters' motives, it gets interesting. You need to get a few more hours in to understand what's doing on.

Doing this 30 minutes-at-a-time blogging probably isn't a good idea...skip ahead to 30 hours in, lol.

It'll be jumping up to hour blogs after this yeah. But honestly, a game shouldn't take 30 hours to get good or entertaining. There are people with a lot shorter attention spans out there then me.

But it's good to know that it should getting better shortly. We'll see.

It's basically the same until Pulse, but it gets good then. The battle system is the only thing I enjoyed about the game.

That is... not a particulary comforting thought.

I've been reading my Guide Book though. It's weird, but around 70% of the game seems to happen AFTER the 13 chapter story. I mean what the hell? Couldn't they find some way to incorporate it? Ugh.

Chapters 1-10 are pretty much tutorials on the battle system, you're still pretty much learning up to that point. In some ways it's like an MMO, gameplay continues with missions etc. even after the game is complete. It's kind of like Dragonquest 9 in that sense.

LOL

All these reviews and comments are making me very curious, yet leery, about this game. Hrm.

Just throw out FFXIII and get to playing Mass Effect 2.

I already played ME1 and 2 back to back a few weeks ago. Perhaps I shouldn't have. It's very hard to play other games after being enthralled by the masterpieces of writing that is ME. Lessens their impact; you know, the whole "It's good, but it's no Mass Effect" syndrome, cause you can't help but compare.

Guess I should have waited until I'd played and finished all the other games, then ended on a high note with ME. Ah well.

Oh well, expectations for FFXIII were high, and anyway it's different genres. I don't remember ever killing off anyone during a FF game (or doing any meaningful plot choice, for that matter),  though I would have done so without hesitation with the likes of Zell and to quite an extent Squall, when he simply acted like an ******* for no reason, and moreover to girls making a pass at him.
It's just all set in stone from the beginning; you can compare the dialogue, which however still has gone through the hell of translation, so give it at least credit for that.

Heh, don't worry. In reality, I'm not really comparing it too Bioware writing. What I AM comparing it to is their past titles, to see if they learned from their mistakes.

Despite having no VO to add emphasis, and suffering quite a number of translation problems, writing in FFVII was still superb. It was engaging, and meaningful, the story progressed well. It had it's cliches and angst, but it was still very good. I can gladly go back and play it any time, and still thoroughly enjoy it.

Then we had VIII, which simply had to much angst. Despite playing for quite awhile in it, I never grew to like any of the characters, and the story was completely uninteresting (to me). Obviously to the people who love it, the game is fine, but that was the main issue for the people who didn't.

In IX, they actually hit a fairly decent balance with Zidane. He was cocky and overly smart ass at times, but generally he was a cheerful character, with only a few moments of angst. It's just a shame they had to surround him with anthropromorphic animals and other weird creatures that scared many players away,

FFX seems like an expirement to me. They'd done one with too much angst, and two with fairly even amounts, so this time they decided to make Tidus as overly cheery and optimistic as possible. The result was that he became extremely irritating to many of us. I can barely even remember the other characters, though I do know only Wakka ever made an impression with me. His VA was truyl amazing.

In FFXII, they avoided making any one character too much of anything, like a collection of side characters instead of focusing too much on any one. Even Vaan, who was kind of meant to be the main character took a back seat for majority of the journey. The story went more as a political fantasy novel, and while many of us loved it, it was a really big change from what FF fans were used to. Much like I guess I'm feeling with FFXIII.

So, taking into account all these different writing styles, I was hoping XIII would strike some sort of balance again. Sadly, it seems like they're just recycling as I feared. Lightning is the angry, slightly selfish soldier who's going to learn more about herself and eventually learn to care for others (Cloud). Sazh is a shallow but amusing side character (tons of those in FF's). Snow is the standard hero who wants to do right by everyone (Tidus, though not as whiney). Vanille is the young annoying, fidgety, erratic female  (Aeris, Yuffie, Rinoa, Eiko, Rikku), who would probably have to die horribly before we care about her. And Hope is the self doubting, scared kid who's going to grow some balls and take charge at some point.

I know. It's hard to find different and unique characters these days. But I really was expecting more. They at least need a chalk board of characters persona's they've already done, so they know not to re-use them. Sheesh.

If they did add twists to their personality, they should be all right even if they didn't create a whole new archetype. I have to draw a Bioware comparison here because frankly the most recent impression comes from Mass Effect, so I'd need an enormous effort of memory to remember other characters from other games.
Garrus Vakarian is your comicbook vigilante, but he's not arresting anyone or talking them out of crime, he believes that just pointing and firing is far more effective; and yet he doesn't become some sort of corrupt merc, he still only kills to give payback for crime. So a potentially boring, archetype character became interesting, at least to me.
Oh dear Christ, I'll have to make a blog on ME2 one day as well.

Did they actually do this to a degree in FFXIII? From what I can garner from you, they didn't.
But then it's FF 13. 13 is a bad number, I tell you.

Also please let's not talk about FFVIII's story, which made absolutely no sense, even compared to other games.

Yeah, all the ME2 characters were great. Which is strange, because I disliked everyone in ME1. Literally the only characters I liked were my Fem Sheppard, Joker and perhaps slightly Wrex.

But then Tali and Garrus came back in 2... and something was different. Maybe they were just written better, or had more dialogue, or more overall personality. But I loved them this time. And all the other characters too. They really polished the character related writing a lot.

As for adding character personality twists in FFXIII:
So far I haven't seen any, and I'm about five hours/4 chapters into the game now. They're about as straight forward as I described above. The only one I really am liking is Sazh. He's meant to be older (judging from how often he complains about "being to old for this crap"), probably in his late 30's or 40's. He's like a voice of logic and normality.

In the current set up, we have Lightning in the corner, not talking to anyone and basically being an unfriendly *****, Snow screaming "WE HAVE TO SAVE THE WORLD! AND MY WIFE!", Hope crying, and Vanille running around babbling constant rubbish like "Everything will be ok! We can do this! OH WAIT SHINY OBJECT! Oh look i'm being cute now! RUN AWAY FROM THE SCARY THING!!! I'm a rabbit with a pancake on my head!"

And then you have Sazh to one side going "Man, you guys have some serious issues. Can we go now?"

I like him:D

I'm sorry but your "review" sucks. 1 hour into the game and you are already damning it?  This game has a ton to offer, and it would be a shame to deny that because of your seemingly non-existent attention span.

Basically, a game is about having fun. It's no fun if there's boring **** before the "fun" part, right? Plus, other games, more interesting ones as well didn't take 1 hour to become engaging anyway. When I first read your question I thought you were going to question his obvious bias, or discuss something he potentially missed on the characters or the combat system, which could have been legitimate complaints. Excusing a game for being boring before being fun is plain retarded.

It's not a review, it's a blog. The purpose of a blog is it log the feelings and opinions you have as you play the game. These are the thoughts and feelings I have had towards XIII within the first hour of gameplay. And they're not good.

But I'm not damning it. I've even said I'll know it gets better. This is just an accurate way to show how ineffective the beginning is at maintaining interest, so it's obviously flawed. However, I've already played a good few hours ahead, and experienced a lot more to change my opinions, so all of this is redundant now anyway.

My real concern is that there will NEVER be a Final Fantasy game that is as fun for me as Final Fantasy 7.

Or course, it doesnt help that they NEVER RELEASE THE DAMN GAMES FOR THE PC!

I cant get too worked up though.  Seems that there are just NOT that many FF games that are actually worth getting into.

hehe, how're things? Yeah, XIII has imrpoved, as my 4 hour blog that's going up will describe. But yeah, it's still not VII. Not by a long long shot.

Finished Pripyat by the way. Pretty awesome, even if the ending was a little abrupt. I never even got to find the fine work tools or buy an exoskeleton. Eh, I'll have to reload and look for more secrets some time. Man, how many endings did they have? There was like 10 slides or more, for nearly every decision you made. God I hope they make another game.

I also ordered the book the STALKER series is slightly based on. It's called "Roadside Picnic". Weird lol.

I personally think Pripyat is the best STALKER game so far.  And I cannot believe you didnt find the Exoskeleton...

I agree about the ending though.

Im looking into the book pronto.
