Despite being one of the things we do most in video game titles, "dying" is an oft overlooked part of gaming, that can greatly impact our playing experience. Kicking the proverbial bucket in most games will cause your character to simply flop to the ground in a heap, while a "You Have Died" or "Mission Failed" screen slowly appears and everything fades to black. Boooor-ring.
Then we have the other end of the spectrum, where they take things too far and subject us to minute long sequences and excessive cries of dismay (yes, Too Human and Metal Gear Solid, I'm glaring at you guys). Can't there be a nice middle ground? Somewhere between "Ho Hum I died" and "LET ME GET BACK TO PLAYING THE GAME YOU BASTARDS!!"?

Thankfully, a select few developers do understand this oh-so-vital balance, and manage to reward us with death scenes that are not only short, they're packed with so much awesome we can't help but go "Aaawwwwww haw haw.... niiiiiceee". Dying can actually become an enjoyable part of the game!
Here I've attempted to collect some of the best ones I've come across. A word of warning: some of these are extremely graphic, and shouldn't be viewed by kids or anyone with a low gore tolerance. Seriously, I have no idea how Dead Space got into Australia. Crazy...
Best of Tomb Raider
Fans have grown to either love or hate our outdated busty heroine in more recent years, and after viewing these videos, I had to start wondering if the developers are feeling a bit bitter towards her too. Tomb Raider Legends features some of the most evil, sadistic deaths I've ever seen a video game character suffer. Watch as Lara is repeatedly slammed into walls, eaten, squished, and bounced A over T along the top of a train. It's so bad, you simply can't look away!
Best of Resident Evil
Resident Evil games have always had some gory deaths, but it wasn't until number 4 came along that the true horror began to show. Dr. Salvadore and his chainsaw decapitations had such a profound and disturbing effect on me, I chose to idolize him as my web avatar.
Chainsaws aside, many other monsters in Res 4 had their own lethal ways of (literally) tearing your face off. Enjoy Leon now as he happily dies his days away for your amusement.
(Warning: Best vid I could find, unfortunately shows ALL the deaths, even the less cool ones, so a little slow. Still cool though heh)
Who didn't play these games as a kid and gawk in pure awe at the brutality of the 'fatality'. The ultimate method of humiliating your opponent, fatalities were imaginative eye candy as well as a fun, three second speed challenge to achieve. Prepare to relive your childhood, and watch Sub Zero pull out peoples spines all over again!
And finally, leaving the best till last: Dead Space. Truly, the best game-death compilation... ever! I saw a few of these the first time I played through it, but certainly didn't know there were this many, or even imagine how violent they could be. This is quite possibly one of the goriest game videos in existence, so be warned. Not for the faint hearted, these can make even the hardest horror fan squirm. It also contains numerous boss spoilers, so maybe hold off on watching it if you plan to play the game in the future
Poor Isaac. Almost feel sorry for him, the amount of times his head and limbs are torn from his body. I don't imagine this is what he signed on for when he ticked that "maintenance man" box heh.

I do enjoy the tomb raider legend ones, especially because they're collected into a compilation video when you complete the game :P

The deaths in Dead Space were so good I tried to get myself killed more times than I can count just to see in what wickedly delightful way Isaac would be ripped apart by the various Necromorphs, atleast, thats what I tell everyone. Nah, Dead Space wasn't a difficult game by any means, by it sure was a lot of fun, surviving or dying.

I've just started Impossible mode. Holy ****... "pooped" and "pants" are words I could use to describe it. The stasis ability is suddenly my best friend, and I'm only on the second level!!
I don't know how much of it I can handle, it's mental torture to the extreme, every corner is nerve wracking!

Hard and Impossible are imo the best difficulties to play on if your a seasoned gamer. I kind of spoiled the experience for myself by playing through on Normal, then Hard and then Impossible, the game loses a lot of its tension that way. On normal I felt like a butcher, abundance of ammunition, blasting and sawing my way through the game, on my next playthroughs I obviously remembered many of the shock points in the game and could deal with it.
Hard and especially Impossible still was a lot more nerve wrecking though, every bullet counts and an encounter with a necro is not something you look forward to. Trying to fight an Impossible necro with no ammo, wildly flailing your empty gun about hoping to land a blow and stomping on another Necro gnawing at your feet, great stuff =)

Impossible mode is getting awesome. Up to the 4rth chapter. Things are tense, but not as scary now. Getting more into the swing of things. I only just realized all the things they leave lying around for you to use against the necros: saw-blades and explosive bottles thrown with kinesis are suddenly the best thing ever. Can take out swarms of them with no effort! Never even used them back in normal. I'm beginning to see exactly how vital kinesis and stasis really are now. In normal they felt like gimmicks, now their use is the difference between life or death lol.
A lot of battles take careful planning now too, like the engine room ambush. had to actually set up all the explosives, time my Line Gun explosive shells right... so much more immersive. Don't know how I'm going to go in later levels, or even against the upcoming brute, but it's going to be fun

Going to re-install this and try on that difficulty. Sounds interesting!

Hopefully we'll be able to add Diablo 3 to the list, since that barbarian dying to that destroyer would be enough to put it on the list.

Fun glitch for the one around 5:20; use the Force Gun's alternate fire right before you can't attack anymore. As soon as you stop having control, you count as a corpse, and we all know what the FG's alt does to bodies, right? So the grenade explodes, your body is completely dismembered... But the tentacle still goes through the motions of reaching back up, wrapping around your throat, and pulling you into the hole.
I had a lot of trouble with that particular tentacle, and seeing that just made my day. I eventually said 'screw it' and one-shotted the damn thing with the megabuster.

You missed the game that started the cool deaths. Search YouTube for spacequest deaths. Great stuff, much more than just variations on the same thing.

One game that I thought had an awesome and quick death sequence was Mirror's Edge. The acceleration coupled with the sound of your body hitting the ground below right when the screen fades away is the best death sequence I've seen in a long while.
