Google has announced its venture into game-based advertising via its official blog.Â
Â
The games that they’re targeting happen to be web-based games like the ones playable on InstantAction, and ‘social games’ like Google’s own Lively. Even the venerated Quake Live would fall under the definition of a ‘web game’.Â
Â
Participating games will be able to display video advertisements, images and text ads in order to earn revenue. Sounds like a great opportunity for many indie and Flash game developers, but what does this really mean for Joe Six Pack like you and me?
Â
AdSense for Games could easily bring to web and indie games what Massive Incorporated did for SWAT4: loads and loads of poster ads for Supernatural and Surface. Gosh, I hope not.
Â
Due to the nature of textures, it’s entirely possible that some game developers will find clever ways implement player character skins bearing advertisements on them.Â
Â
A web-based football game could have players running around in jerseys bearing corporate logos, and other traditional placement locations for advertising. Not bad. But how would such advertisements be implemented into first person shooters like Quake Live? Tampax girth plates and Nike-swooshed body armor? You betcha! Here’s a mockup of what that would look like:

If there were an option to disable in game ads by paying for the game, would you pay? Or would you look for a "hack" that allowed you to both continue playing for free, as well as disable in game ads? Honest question.
YOU wear nike shoes.
YOU buy coke from vending machines.
YOU search with google.
YOU think different like millions of people with you iPod
YOU look for a ****friend on adultfrendfinder.com (a gamer has needs and cyber is meh)
But in fantasy games bleh...
An elf wearing nike boots of agility would simply make me shutdown the game puke in the DVD case and **** in my DVD drive to purge it from traces of unholiness.
