A 15-year old boy by the name of Ionut Silviu Savin (pictured) killed his adoptive mother by stabbing her 17 times with a knife before leaving his home to play Counter-Strike at a local internet café for four hours.
The murder, which occurred this past Wednesday, was headline news in Romania.
Ionut was said to be ‘dependant’ to video games, which caused his mother to terminate his access to the internet, a decision which lead to her murder.
The woman’s body was discovered by her husband, Ionut’s adoptive father, as he returned home from work. Although the man contacted the police, Ionut turned himself in to police custody, taking full responsibility for his actions.
According to his father and witness accounts in the Romanian news, Ionut is reported to have given up his studies and social life for the violent game, and missed over 200 classes in the past year.
When interviewed, the supervisor of the Internet café that Ionut frequented stated that the boy would spend most of his time alone playing Counter-Strike, wearing a hood over his head. She also noted that the boy had a calm demeanor, never swearing when he lost matches, or displaying an ounce of anger. He rarely interacted with the café’s other patrons.
His high school teacher, who was shocked by the boy’s actions, said that he had a “quiet and introverted” personality.
Ionut is currently hospitalized under guard at a psychiatric clinic, and awaits examinations to determine whether he was in full control of his actions at the time of the crime. If tried and found guilty of first degree murder, Ionut may face up to 12 years in prison.

Honestly, and as much as you probably don't want to hear it, prison is about getting dangerous people out of the reach of public. Yes, there are some cases where people genuinely are not dangerous but still go to jail, but a boy who killed his own mother over internet access fits the "get them out of civil society" bill perfectly.

In a police state maybe. It's far more useful to actually attempt to rehabilitate the inmates rather then store them in cells which fixes NOTHING and costs an absurd amount of money.

Small price to pay to get nutjobs off the street?
Some people can't be rehabilitated, especially sociopaths like this guy. It's a hard wired brain thing, like being gay or republican. No amount of therapy can change the person you are, so to speak. So, short of the death penalty, just getting them away from society is the next best thing.

It doesn't have to cost a lot. Back in the day, the inmates had to get over the fact that their rights are out the window, and slum life in prison is now their existence.
The moment he stabbed her, he killed his rights and civil life. I mean because he lost his internet!? Such mentality, reasoning or whatever you want to call it, to make you kill... he should be locked up away from society!
Where is that prison that's the most luxurious prison in the world? ****, if they aim to make that the standard, ppl on the street will start killing and robbing ppl just to go to prison for the soft beds and delicious food! WTF!

Probably 1.6. The old engine causes less rage due to its lack of sticky walls.

A 15 year old here in the States kills his buddy imitating a wrestling move and gets LIFE. This guy stabbed his mom 17 times and gets 12 years? And that's IF he gets convicted. 12 years is waaay too lenient for killin your own momma in such a brutal way, adoptive or not.

convicted of murder == 12 years?. agreed, way too lenient. how's this justifiable?

"How would 25 years be humane" is the better question.

The article also has the opinion of a psychiatrist who says the boy had signs of schizophrenia. Raising someone is not equal to caring for someone. Games don't create monster kids, people do.

This is always an issue. Guy kills someone, and society/autorities etc point to his gaming experiences as the cause or trigger. FAIL!
I've been playing FPS, RTS, MMO, Racing and all such games since I was about 14! You don't see me racing the streets and killing ppl do you!? NO!
Some people are just more messed up that others. Snapping at some point and killing everyone in the store... Games or internet has got NOTHING to do with it!
