The Madness Of A Diablo II Player

I have written the following article to examine the processes that go through one's mind as one plays Diablo II. Here I will make an attempt to note the feelings and actions of one such player as he or she is enveloped in a violent drama of madness and frustration.

-----

Chapter I: Origins

You're new to Diablo II, and you're proud of your level 60 character. You've been playing the game for about a week, in the comfort of friends, and after a few false starts with a few bad characters, you think you've finally gotten the hang of things. Your character's poorly armed and thus you intend to do something about it.

One of your friends advises you to join a “Baal run”, which he says is a quick and easy way to get geared up in the safety of seven other players. “The more players, the merrier” he says. “Increases the chance of getting better loot, too!”

Convinced and optimistic, you hit the Join Game option and behold a veritable selection of games that fit your criteria. In fact, the whole list is filled with nothing but games labeled “Trade”, “Baal run” and “Cow Run”. You click on one of the Baal runs and log right in.

By the time you get in, everyone's already leaving. You do this three to five more times before you realize that the easiest way to get in one of these games is to look at the name of an ongoing game like “Baal Runs 067” and create “Baal Runs 068” before anyone gets there.

Chapter II: The Worldstone Chamber

For the first time ever, you're the first one in a game with seven other players and by the time the last person has logged in, everyone's already off to kill Baal by heading to the Worldstone Keep. The battles are easy, and you feel safe surrounded by so many other players. In a few minutes, the entire party has made its way down to the final floor and proceeds into the Worldstone Chamber, where Baal awaits.

With Baal almost dead, everyone comes in close to pick up the items he drops. Baal explodes like a pinata, showering the vicinity with runes, unique items and an assortment of rare trash. It's been awhile since you've gotten any decent loot so you'd be happy if you managed to get anything. In the blink of an eye, almost everything is gone.

“But wait a moment,” you think to yourself, “There's two items left on the ground. I'm not too late!” You try to pick it up but it simply flops on the ground. You click it again and it flops yet again. “Oh crap! My inventory is full!” you think to yourself. In the split second that this thought has passed through your mind the items left on the ground are no more and everyone has left.

Thats the truth of it Sol.  Sadly.  The progression was the same for me as you have outlined.  What really, REALLY sucked was having a Pally easily..and I mean EASILY...kill my Bowazon level 86.  WIth her ULTRA Exceptional Unique set equipped.  And The Pally was level 56.  :/  In fact, I cannot even play the game online, or indeed ever again after learning about the extreme imbalance in the game.  At least for me this was my experience.  None of the other classes appealed to me at all so sadly the game lost ALOT of appeal to me.  I love the game, just hate the underpoweredness of the type of character I enjoyed playing the most.  I was equipped with Windforce as well if I remember that character correctly.

Hoping Diablo 3 is more balanced.  Keep in mind that I never played with, I think, the last 2 updates.  1.10 version was where I gave up.

You know, I originally penned this article as a "Top 10 List Of Things I Hate In Diablo 2" but I eventually decided against it as the article approached proper form.

Cow runs were just for xp until 1.10, after that they were (afaik) useless. No one went there for items really.

For items you should have done Mephisto runs on Hell or Baal Runs.
But one should always go solo or make a pw game with a friend for drops....

You forgot about one ridiculous part of drops.
There's finally a drop you actually would want, but don't have the inventory for, so you hold the item over your inventory with the mouse, waiting for everyone to leave the room before you can organize it in. the wait is hell.

You can log out and it'll still be on your cursor when you log in later

Even works in single player

Great write up.

"As it turns out, creating new characters was all you ever enjoyed about
the game, and it's the reason why you still play it, eight years since
then."

This is so true for me that it hurts x.x

that is a bit sad perspective, i was on the other end of the story killing the group looting diablo (btw how do you not  notice a player going hostile with you? he has to be in town for that and get all the way to you!), but more often i'd just loot stuff faster in the runs, and generally not have bad luck

Haha this is all so true. Especially the part where your inventory is full when an awesome item drops. Strangely enough this makes me want to play the game again, but I think I'll save all that enthusiasm and thirst for Diablo 3.

Strangely, I noticed today the Dramatica entry on this game has a fan art I drew two years ago. Weird.

All the game ever ended up as was endless Baal runs. It's like in a MMO - where you have these raids that progress from one to the next? If they were all about equal, it'd offer some endgame variety. The Cave and kin aren't really good substitutes, since they lack a boss.

Currently I'm still grinding normal Diablo for those magefists, since it's been like seven years now and I think I deserve to have them. At run # 54 and day 11 of the ordeal. I ran the numbers and it's about a 70% chance I'll get them by run ~200.

World of Warcraft seems gentle, in comparison...

Well, it's really not. In World of Warcraft, it might take you several weeks just to make the kind of progress you can make within a few hours of playing Diablo 2.

excuse my nerdyness, though it has been quite a while since i played.  but dont you have to agree to a battle in order for another player to attack you?  and if so, isnt that a major plot hole in your story?

That sounds about right lol.

One thing though, I noticed last night that it was a very long article. Where is the rest? I it coming in separate write ups?

Another "trick" to get loots faster was to NOT use the Original CD,because i.e. whenever Diablo died, the CD drive spinned up just to play another music theme for the Chaos Sanctuary (same with some other bosses) and thus resulting in 1-2 seconds lag where most of the items were already grabbed by other players.

Instead, one would mount an iso and thus avoid those 1-2 second "lags".
