Preface: The article is written in the form of a letter, with specifically stylistic references to Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther. It's not meant to be a journalistic article.
FunCom, the creators of Age of Conan sent me an e-mail today entitled “Ian, your 14 day re-evaluation of Age of Conan is now available”.–How curious–I thought! I'd only played the game for three days and they're already pining for my return as if I were their long lost childhood friend.
The e-mail went on to state, “Ian! Your level 18 Guardian awaits your return to Age of Conan!”–And that a “staggering number of improvements” had been added to the game in the past months–improvements which I readily ignored whenever possible.
I tell you, dear friend, when my senses are reeling all my tumult is allayed by the prospect of playing such a blatant failure of a video game whose developers calmly and happily follow the narrow circle of their existence, who help themselves from one day to the next, see the leaves fall and have no other thought than that their next paycheck is soon coming. *
F*ck off! I want my money back.–I say to them.
Dear friend, perhaps you are unaware of the source of my sudden outburst, so please allow me to elaborate–Age of Conan was a game like every other failed MMO of 2008; a product of its time. I tell you, it seems rather certain that FunCom, having supposedly learned from its mistakes with Anarchy Online, anticipated far too many players with an interest in the game and thus ended up dedicating far too many launch servers towards it, draining both their own resources and splitting the community into unmanageably tiny portions.
Released prematurely with a dysfunctional RPG system and barely featuring any content outside of the game's tutorial stage, Tortage–or “Tortuga” as its players often called it–it would seem that its placid developers learned scarce little from their prior experiences with their previous game.
Eventually realizing their mistakes, FunCom states in the e-mail that the game has been upgraded with “tons of action-packed content” including a “completely new item and RPG system”.–Too little, too late.–I would exclaim.
It is too little, too late.
Editor's Note: My apologies to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for paraphrasing him.

They should just call the game "Age of Tortage" and be done with it, because that's the only area in the entire game that is polished well enough.

LOL, well I had fun in this game when it came out... But it seems like it died...
I received and email last night reading "Free 14 day Re-evaluation now available. Kobus! Your level 35 Conqueror awaits your return to Age Of Conan!"
They seem desperate to get the game going again

Can't blame 'em for trying. Especially if the updates are actually worthwhile (which they might not be).

No way.
Even if the upgrade is worth it. No condonation.
We dont want to set an example for other publishers.
Message: publish first, fix later, we are patient cows, its ok, we pay in advance...
Rip me off once, then die. plz.

Then why cry about it later because you didnt read media when it came out, as if someone forced you to buy it any case.

When eating at a restaurant, i expect the food not to be expired/poisoned.
Why ?
Because restaurants dont sell poisoned food by default. Thats common sense.
When i buy a game that claims 80 levels+, i expect to get more than 20 lvls.
Following your logic, would you also say:
"Why did you eat in that restaurant without reading reviews ?"
Because i expect to maybe get a little less than claimed, but not only 1/4 of it.
Yea, i have to admit, i am a fool for trusting the cook... but then.. my stupidity doesnt make him right, or does it ?

I really do hate that side of FunCom. Passionately.
That said, I tend to give things their due. A while after the 14 day trial came out, I signed up for and subsequently downloaded it... figuring, the game's been out a while, and it's probably as far along as (knowing FunCom) it was going to get before a bona-fide expansion, for better or for worse.
Only reason that I even went there, though, was because a friend of mine saw it on Steam for cheap and picked it up, and then turned around and prodded me to try it out too.
Never made it past level 13. ...Hell, that friend of mine never even finished his month playing. Uninstalled before three weeks were up... go figure.

Wow developers certainyl need that 150 million dollars per month to uphold theyre servers
You can always go write a review moanng about technical glitches and stuff. For that blame the publishers not the developers.

If you never got past lvl 18, how do you know at all what the content is like outside of Tortage?
