id Software has released a few new screenshots showcasing Rage's beautiful environments with the company's new id Tech 5 engine that makes use of a new "virtual texturing" process that enables the developers to create "unique, very large" textures to populate the game world.
It's really kind of difficult to explain so I'll let this PDF do the talking. It should prove interesting for the technically inclined among you.
In layman's terms, what you're looking at represents the next generation of engine technology, and it's capable of featuring large, wide open terrain without requiring too much processing power. Unreal Tournament be damned, Rage is where it's at.

Looks great but my mind isn't exactly blown. It's just more of what we have seen already. I'll start ****ting my pants when we see true photo realistic gaming at 60 frames per second.

Sure, but you can't disagree that it's a huge improvement...

I agree, the sky is especially improved. It's not like I don't want it, it just doesn't feel revolutionary that's all. Not a bad thing.

With Doom 3's release, we were all stunned at how well it's been done. The engine and the texturing etc...
Now that Doom 3 is quite old and we're all over that tech, they come back again with some new impressive advancements
I'm LOVING it! It's so much closer to realism than before (not there yet, but closer), and the sky!... *mouth hangs open*
Well done id! Keep it going!
I'll be following up on all this
