"Scandal. In the game Bioshock 2, children are used and murdered. Little girls are used like dogs looking for drugs for their masters."
Aforementioned is the wordy headline used by major regional Polish newspaper Gazeta Lubuska, which expressed its outrage at Bioshock 2 in an editorial today.
Bemoaning the game’s lack of Christian (or Catholic) values, the newspaper describes Bioshock 2’s core gameplay as the Big Daddy’s use of little girls, trapped into inhumane lives and forced to seek out drugs for their masters in a “world without rules, in a country without God, faith and no moral principles”.
The story came to the attention of the writer after one “terrified internet user” contacted them to express his disgust and disapproval of the game as his son wished to play it upon its release. “My son asked me about it (the game), but as I learned what it contained, it scared me,” he wrote in.
He had learned that in Bioshock 2, some small children extract the drugs from the bodies of dead men, and that the vast majority of the characters consisted of drug addicts (splicers) who attack the Little Sisters to attain what they want. The protagonist is the Big Daddy, who can, as he expresses his disgust, “reportedly use children.” He described the game as consisting of little more than “Drug addicts, lunatics, whose sole purpose is to acquire ‘territory’”.
Further research by the author revealed that the game was also promoting what he calls “Anti-Catholic values”, as the game is set in the city of Rapture, one devoid of rules and principles. Clearly missing the whole point of the story and its critique of Ayn Rand’s Objectivist movement, the writer asks if the game promotes Satanism and “extreme liberalism”.
Though the writer finally lauds the game for having good graphics, he can’t help but express his ‘shock’ with the game’s supposed ‘message’ and asks why such provocative content should be in the realm of video games. Clearly, video games are all made for children and thus deserve no artistic merit.
The newspaper has since asked Cenega Poland, which distributes and sells the game in the country, for a comment on the allegations.

Gazeta Lubuska is indeed one of the press available in Lubusz voivodeship (1 of 16...and rather a smaller one), but i would be very carefull to call it "major". GJ for manipulating facts to achieve "bigger sensation". It happens all the time and everywhere. Nothing special and unusual.

I don't think the writer understands what liberalism is typically defined as. (The opposite of what the game is about, as the writer originally describes it).

"Clearly, video games are all made for children and thus deserve no artistic merit." clearly you're dumb. people of all ages play video games. And its a video game it doesn't promote ****. So if bioshock 2 were a book and it consisted of a story which is a walkthrough of the game would it still have anti-christian values? Its entertainment. Some people...

This was a quote from the author of this online article, not the newspaper one. He was being sarcastic. fyi, sarcasm is fun yet doesn't translate in type that well.

Maybe if I used the sarcastic font, he would've gotten it. Yeah, I bet he totally would've gotten it then.

Nobody cares. Christians get offended over everything. Maybe if they started helping society, we'd give a crap.

All people who "believe in" theological systems get offended. It's all you can do when a big portion of what goes on in your head is unsupported by the facts of reality.

The game also has an M rating for a reason. Because kids shouldn't play it because they would be easily influenced, and grown ups are mature enough to deal with these kinds of topics and not apply them in a real life context.

Is this post meant to underline the irony of the situation? I hope so. Clearly, not all adults are on the trolley here.

I agree with the news paper in that it is has Anti-Catholic values it also has Anti-Goverment values if you look at it simply.
It is part of the setting in Rapture, I don't remember the saying from the first game but basically is said there is No goverment, No Religion only a Capitalist free Market in Rapture. But what happens when there is no Goverment and no Religion (No Sins), Rapture Changes from a Utopia to a Hell Hole.

Wasn't that the whole point in the first game was to learn this? That's what I took out of the story. I do like Rob's point. And, again, the game is rated M for a reason.
