In an attempt to curb child predation, the police in Missouri are now claiming that any adult who owns and plays games like Animal Crossing probably doesn't have a good reason to do so and is most likely a pedophile with bad intent.

Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing
Only pedophiles play it?
"There is no reason an adult should have [Animal Crossing: City Folk]," says Andy Anderson, Mid-Missouri Internet Crimes Task Force.

Anderson says adults playing "Animal Crossing" and similar games are likely doing it for the wrong reasons.

Astounding. I don't think I should even have to mention that it's impossible for an adult to get in contact with a random child through Animal Crossing without first acquiring his friend code in real life, so what gives?

Given a rise in poorly researched media reports where predators allegedly meet their prey through online games, such fears are unfounded, and based purely on the ignorance and fear of the general public. Needless to say, it's very disheartening to hear such ignorant opinions from a member of law enforcement.

Couldn't the same be said about any activity enjoyed by children? I see no reason why adults can't appreciate good games like Beautiful Katamari, Noby Noby Boy or Ragnarok Online any more than children.

I have a curious image of two creepy guys unwittingly trying to groom each other because all the kids are playing CSS, TF2 or L4D and they signed up to Hello Kitty Online.

The message that parents should make their children aware that they need to be as circumspect with adults that they meet online as those that they meet in real life seems sensible but clearly it's idiotic to make blanket accusations about the motivations of adult gamers - especially when some of the adult fans of this particular game are playing it because they've owned every version of Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon games since 1996, back when they were minors themselves.

LOL. one old dude to another old dude in Hello Kitty Island Adventure:

Ur Hawt, wuts ur ASL?

LOL.

But yes, excellent point, a lot of us Harvest Moon fans were kids ourselves when the franchise came out... I'd really like to just assume that this cop was speaking off the cuff, but I'm truly afraid he's dead serious and considers himself some kind of profiler. shudders

leave it to the narrow-minded arrogant media to blow something completey out of proportion that is perfectly harmless. i mean, C'mon.

Inactment:

*police breaks down the door with his foot* "POLICE!! you are under arrest for pedophilia! "What! how did you come to THAT conclusion?!" *other police speaking in the background* "he has animal crossing chief" ANIMAL CROSSING!! THAT'S A CHILD'S GAME...and your 40!!..that immediately means you have sex with kids....for a reason we can't back up" your sick Mr.smith..sick" Book'em Danno!"

yup, great detective work Mr.Anderson *******.

Why noone teach kids to be aware of police, parents and politicians that are more close to them that something unknown persons.

I think that something like this police assertion should be the base for a major disbandment.

The media's jumping on it like sharks, as always. Sounds like a new round of gamer persecution.

For all of us who enjoy these games, we should email Mister Anderson and ask him to clarify that statement. A simple search found the website for the task force and his profile and ability to email is here: http://mmictaskforce.com/Coordinator.aspx

If he's going to make asinine blanket statements, perhaps he should answer to those of us who are adults and enjoy these sorts of games for their simple non violent tendencies.

Oh! Thank you for digging up that address. I'll be sure to send him a letter telling him exactly how I feel.

Crispy Gamer got a followup--the news outfit apologized for perhaps sensationalizing the comments. I will say that in his comments, Anderson was rather vague--though still out of line. The news outfit did say that some kids had, in fact, been contacted via Animal Crossing--but it's a sensationalized story about sensationalizing the dangers of restricted access online gaming.

Ahh reason number 4357 as to why I can't wait to move out of Missouri. You'll have to excuse the newspapers here, as it seems they base most of their information off of speculation, and lies, rather than logic and common sense.
Also, I just started this account and they didn't get my name right, that makes me a sad panda :(

You took your name after the Sigur Ros song, eh? Yeah, I'm afraid the name system doesn't support ASCII like Ágætis

You may wish to make a new account. :)

Agaetis Byrjun would work.

?!?!?!?!?!!!

So.... my wife is a pedophile?

I guess the police also think that only males play video games, and no adults of either gender in their right mind would like things that are 'cute'... what died in these people??

...I like playing Uno too, does this make me a psychotic creep, by Andy Anderson's high logic?
