Due to the requirement of Valve’s Steamworks in the PC version of Modern Warfare 2, online retailers like Direct 2 Drive, Impulse and GamersGate are refusing to carry the Infinity Ward title on their lists.
Speaking to Kotaku, a Direct2Drive representative said, “We don’t believe games should force the user to install a Trojan Horse.”
Infinity Ward is using Steamworks to handle everything from installation to save-game management and DRM, similar to Valve’s own games.
Direct2Drive also told the website they told publishers that they would stop selling any games that came coupled with Steamworks, such as Dawn of War II and Empire: Total War, two games which came out earlier this year and that they would only pick the titles up if they were ‘decoupled’ from Steam.
The "Trojan Horse" remark is ironic coming from Direct2Drive, the same company which used an invisible rootkit to handle DRM for products from their store. As an end-user, you'd be better off hedging your bets with Steam's lesser evil.

The fact that their remark about trojans is ironic indeed, though that doesn't make their position entirely undefendable. Entrusting a game to Steam and Steam only doesn't make for good free market, that's for sure.

Makes sense. Why would you sell a game that's linked to you competitor?

Sorry but there's nothing wrong with Steam. D2D though, I've had problems with. Their service is nowhere near as good as Steam.

Yeah, I was thinking, "Hold on one freaking second here, didn't D2D have some big issue in the past about rootkits or something before?"
I think I agree it's not healthy to "entrusting a game to Steam and Steam only," but compared to the other retailers, I think it's a better choice. Except for Impulse, maybe.
Also, am I the only person who had no idea MW2 was even implementing Steamworks until now?

D2D have the worst servers and customers service, 3 days to download a game, never ever use them ever.
So basically they are skipping out on the one title that will sell the most this year not very smart for business.

I use both D2D and Steam. With D2D I can be disconnected from the 'net and still run my software. with Steam, it doesn't matter if it's a 100% single player game w/ no online modes. If I'm not online and signed in, I can't run the software.
This worries me. What happens when Steam's server isn't around anymore? Basically we are "licensing" content subject to the whim of the distribution channels.

what you can always do is download the iso version and then buy it online and get the cdkey out of the registry. then you install the original from iso and use the cdkey you bought to play multiplayer.
screw steam!

I thought I would say that why does it matter NO MONEY FOR THEM steam is overly safe with probably over 3 million accounts and like 95% of them bought something from the steam store. I have bought 15 games from steam and if this is a Trojan Horse I like it.

There are 20 reasons to boycott MW2 and Direct 2 Drive picks the worst one of the lot *facepalm*
@Vork: The last Steam user count I heard was 20mil+, but I'm not sure of the validity of that. The last official count however was at 15mil+, quite a bit more the 3 mil =)
