It's a joyous day for classic adventure fans and gamers everywhere as LucasArts just announced today that its remake of The Secret of Monkey Island will be priced at 800 Microsoft Points on XBL or 10 dollars on Steam.

This remake of the adventure game that helped to define an entire generation of gamers and shaped the gaming world as we know it will feature redrawn graphics, full voice acting and a remastered score, all courtesy of the best and brightest at LucasArts. As an added plus, nostalgic players will even have the option of disabling the new graphics in favor of the original art style.

The game is set to launch on July 15th on both the Xbox Live Arcade and Steam.

Here's a gallery of pictures to showcase the difference between unforgettable moments within the original Monkey Island and the new version.

What I've always struggled with is the fact that Monkey Island always seems to be credited with being the birth of adventure gaming. Space Quest 1 came out in 1986 if I remember correctly (that's 4 years earlier) and Roger Wilco was always far more of a childhood hero for me than Guybrush Threepwood. I love Monkey Island, but Space Quest will always be what it's all about for me and deserves more recognition I think. Plus, the text parser interface is amazing - much more adventurous than the Monkey Island interface...Roger > Guybrush.

I think the key words are "point and click adventure". And Monkey Island wasn't the first, even from Lucasfilm Games, but it was the pinnacle of humorous adventure games.

About the screenshots, I think the close-ups look prettier in the original version... The new stuff looks all Clone-Wars ugly.

There are tons and tons of adventure games out there (wasn't King's Quest before Space Quest?) and the majority of them brought something new to the genre :)

Personally, Monkey Island, Loom, and Full Throttle were the three that really stood out to me and defined the 'Adventure Game' thang.

Guybrush Threepwood offers some sensible consumer advice there.

What, so now the graphics have been pointlessly re-stylized to be more palatable to the current generation of games consumers?  Ugh.  There's a certain charm to the original pixelated graphics that just seems to be missing from these new screens.  We'll see...

@Jim - ...Which is why they give you the option of sticking with the original graphics.  Good call by LucasArts it seems.

I'll probably play with the new graphics, though I agree that they're pretty "meh".  The new graphics are a bit easier on the eye for the distance shots.

I think Monkey Island was a great game and one of the best adventure games, but I'm not exactly sure how it helped define a generation of gamers or helped shape the gaming world.  Especially when the genre itself was basically gone by the mid-late 90's.

I, for one, am not a fan of Guybrush's new short-on-the-sides haircut. If they had left his hair the same as the old version, I would be totally down with this new art style.

Yeah he looks a bit douchey. The opposite of how I'd imagine Guybrush to look.

Ugh Agh Aaaa! - can we has more ugly pls? Someone really smart put the disable option in and someone (else) really dumb wasted a lot of money on the new graphics...well, 'worse' seems to be the new 'New' in Video games anyway
