In an attempt to promote Dragon Age while simultaneously insulting the intelligence of the target audience of aforementioned game, Maxim has published a pictorial of the “hotties” (female characters, to those of you who aren’t suffering from some form of brain injury) of Bioware’s upcoming RPG.
The following quote has since been altered (as of 12pm EST) to something less dickish, though objectifying nonetheless:
Unless doing it kinky-style with your significant other, role-playing is the second nerdiest thing you could possibly do. Playing role-playing video games is No. 1, which puts Bioware's upcoming RPG Dragon Age: Origins at a severe disadvantage in the "make us interested" category. Fortunately for them, they've got a couple of aces in the hole: sneaky seductress Leliana and shapeshifting mage Morrigan. Both are possible romantic companions in the game, but you don't have to wait until the release date to fall in love with them. We've got exclusive photos of real-life hotties Alleykatze and Victoria Johnson who lent their sexy curves to their video game counterparts.
While the advertisement feature is clearly a bid to appeal to Maxim’s reader base, I can’t help but sigh at the reaction of some of the game’s more juvenile community members on the official forums.
Forum poster Musicalfrog7 sums up the situation most aptly:
Looking at the link, and reading a few other related articles on the Maxim website, I have to say the men who write this stuff are... sleazy, shallow, women-objectifying, piggish, and disgusting. If I ever saw a man reading this stuff it would be a major turn-off. I think you should be ashamed of yourself if you even buy into this.
Yeah, nothing wrong with a sexy ladeh huh? Except for how downgrading and objectifying they are tended to be made in the process.

Not too shocking considering Maxim relies on objectifying women and appealing to the "douche" demographic.

I'm surprised any magazine would stomp on gamers toe's these days... There's nothing like the angry forum goers...
I was quite bummed reading the first two lines of the quote, it seems a little uncalled for. I'm glad I don't buy maxim or read it, if I paid for a mag and read that, I'd probably have thrown it away...

Not surprised in the least. Maxim's target demographic is the collar popped douchebags who get off on telling other people how awesome they (the douchebags) are. Which is kinda ironic cause the rest of the world is laughing right back at them for being that shallow and stupid.

I actually have a subscrition to maxim. It was only eight USD. However, I don't reveille in the objectifying of women. I do like the jokes in the magazine though. But it's hard to for the magazine to hide that their writers are pretty bad.
side note: Hey Sol, you should put out a magazine. You write very well and you don't degrade anyone.

I lol'ed. I don't see anything wrong with looking at the boobies and bums. At all. Saying that, I just have to say that I get kinda saddened when I read the retarded bullsh** what devs have with respect to the females they place in their computer games. I really think its time for that nonsense to just die.
Guys arent mindless creatures who are so pathetic that they have to get their biological rush staring at well rendered/endowed female characters in a video game. They arent. So this idea that guys are like this just needs to come to an end.
I understand while I type this that there ARE definately adz-clowns out there who quite honestly use these graphical add ons (lets be honest here...too many female characters in modern gaming are no more than interactive eyecandy) as a vicarious thrill, they are sure as hell not a majority.
As a female gamer, I find that these retarded comments offensive.

Thanks Lonethar. This view that some marketers and game developers have is just as demeaning to men as it is to women.

I only play games that feature women with enormous breasts and enough curves to flip a Lambo. Please, explain to me where I can find this Dragon Age: Origins, that I might observe the women inside, and possibly inside the women.

the idea that showing attractive semi-nude women is offensive obectifying is absurd. this attitude stems from a fear in our society of female sexuality and power, which is based on the misogynism of the bible. in the christian tradition, women were and stll are considered unclean and impure and are viewed as temptresses that corrupt men. the taliban shows these views in extreme - women are not allowed to leave the house without a male family member and are covered head to toe. there is nothing wrong, shameful, or exploitive about female nudity.
