id Software’s John Carmack dropped a bombshell today when he announced that the company’s upcoming game and next-generation FPS, Rage, would have no plans to support dedicated servers.
In the wake of Modern Warfare 2’s omission of dedicated servers on the PC, Variety asked id Software co-founder and video game god John Carmack the company had any plans to follow suit with their upcoming game. Carmack’s replied: “It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers.”
While id Software has yet to announce what system they plan on using for Rage, I would strongly speculate that it’ll be something along the lines of Infinity Ward’s locally hosted listen servers via a system similar to Infinity Ward's IWNet.
Still speaking to the magazine, Carmack stated he believed that dedicated servers were “something of a remnant” of the early days of PC gaming and that he realizes that affinity many PC gamers have with such systems. He says that he is glad that Rage will not be leading the charge, and simply following in step of the many new and upcoming titles that have no plans to support dedicated servers.
“The great thing is we won’t have to be a pioneer on that,” he says. “We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”
On that note, it sounds like id Software's decision to omit dedicated servers from Rage will depend entirely on the success and feedback of IWNet in the PC version of Modern Warfare 2. Should it be poorly received, id Software might reconsider their decision.
Carmack's comments about Rage may seem strange and even a little disappointing, especially given his past support for the PC and modding community in general. id Software and Splash Damage were very quick to confirm that dedicated server support would be present in the upcoming id Tech 4-driven FPS, Brink, so we can only speculate on their decision.

wow, that sucks. it's obvious they're trying to push their console market share with the move. just a matter of time before someone hacks together a dedicated server for this, MW2 and others who go this route.

Way to go, IW. Look what you ******* started. PC gaming is going down the ****ter.
For you slow ones out there, I'm being slightly sarcastic here. But seriously, dedicated servers are NICE. I will be buying MW2 but only because the single player looks irresistible. I'm hoping the multiplayer is playable. We will see how pissed off this makes me.

That's why I was saying that I hope the multiplayer will be playable. Otherwise I'm going to be pissed. I have like 500 hours in Cod4 / WaW multiplayer but only 10-15 hours in the single player of each.

I still play CounterStrike Source to this day because of dedicated servers. I have couple favorite servers, modded all to hell, that I regularly visit an am recognized there.
I will gladly boycott MW2 and Rage if that's what it takes to reverse this trend. I -enjoy- playing on servers that are maintained by a single person or small community. I like having a new experience on different servers, with dedicated admins to hold people accountable for their actions. If you take the human side out of the server you take the soul out of the game.
On the other side you eliminate the joy of being a server admin, to watch your hard work unfold into a small community of enthusiasts.
If ID or Infinity Ward want to run a server farm, have at it. Make it the default, nobody will care. To coldly decide that you own the cake and nobody else can have any is greedy and disgusting. You alienate the intelligent and the passionate and cheapen the experience for everyone who remains.
Nvidia and AMD should be lining up to kick your butts, if I decide I don't need your games because you refuse to share the server side experience then I don't need to waste my money on a next gen graphics card.

@Dude
ROFL. You do realize while you have a so-called life, it's those PC enthusiasts and server admins who have either made the game you're enjoying. Or probably they're the sysadmin or network engineer at the company you're probably a low level grunt at. Some life.

REAL men play PC games. :P
I'm not actually insulting anyone's manhood if they only play console games, I own an Xbox 360 myself (and it's red-ringed, woot), but I will argue that PC gaming is superior.
Oh, yeah, the article. Fail.

Kudos n00bie51! I got an XBOX360 too, but ALL I play on it (and all it's meant for imo) are fighting, racing, adventure and music games. End of discussion.

I don't think this is going to have the same impact that MW2 had. As far as I understand, Rage is going to be more of your run of the mill SP/co-op game.
Now if it has a strong focus on deathmatch and competitive multiplayer, then we'd have problem. It does disturb me that he refers to dedicated servers as a "remnant of the past", when they are clearly the way forward (this can be mathematically proven). Listen servers if anything are the remnant.
