It should be said that there were good times. Good times made to taste even sweeter because of all the bitterness surrounding it, not in spite of it. Lasting friendships were forged and alliances were formed. Hellforge, for instance, would not exist, if not for the prior existence of Hellgate Guru. History has left its mark on us all.
In memory of the game, Ahriman of the Hellgate Guru forums penned this little write-up [link] of the game's final moments:
"Those who stayed up long enough could witness the last shut-down of HG:L. Most players had gathered in Stonehenge and on the minute of 6 am GMT, or midnight CST, did Hellgate: London prompt with an unknown network error and refused any further connection attempts."

Additionally, sillytubbie wrote the following, whose final words echo my thoughts:
"Yes, even the webpage is gone.
Feels like it was just launched yesterday, when I got really hyped up about the game, cannot concentrate on work and rushed to the launch site to get my CE box. Ran home and played the game for a full 4 hours.

This game will always have a place in my heart."

I would like to thank those players, who used all their millions of cash to fuel the war drive, and rocked the game during its last hours.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Truly a sad moment when the server died, even though it was expected .. In spite of all the bugs etc. I will miss the game very much .. Thanks to the entire HG-L community

Still never had the chance to play it... wish I did though. Maybe since I am in Japan I can try out the korean version someday (just one country over!)
Still, the best thing about HGL for me was that Mythos sprang out of its little networking test. Now, all are gone.Â

I actually upgraded my PC in order to play HG:L more smoothly at that time.
I have no regrets. The game was fun, the people were mostly nice. It was a good ride while it lasted.
Sorry to see the problem child go.

Well, good bye Hellgate!
But as Sol said, Friendships were forged that wouldn't have existed without Hellgate London. We had a great community at the Guru, a great radio show (<3) and I myself am still in contact with some of the first who joined Hellgateguru...

Same as Garm here.
I would like to add the things I miss the most from HG:L :
       The HGG community
The news (because compared to the news we get for DIII... I feel for the Apple fanboy, I now know how they feel)
       The Templar armors
My wish for the future? To have games that actually bring what HG:L promised, and some of the good stuff it actually delivered.

This game and the epic fail that it was, can do one useful thing. Provide an example to others as something to never be a part of. Its death is a fitting result of terrible....well...everything.

Maybe we should all start listing the things we missed and the things that we don't miss from back in the Hellgate: London days. It'll be fun to get everything aired out.Â

Miss: Community, Art Direction, Loot Drops
Don't Miss: Everything Else :p
I really doubt that except for the people who played the game until the end the lists would be much different, as really the art, loot and fans are what made the game good...
The lore, setting (sewers and more sewers), lack of monster types are what made the game something that got old after a short time...Â

I cannot think of anything that I would not miss. Even the bugs were kind of spectacular. They did not made the game weak but added to the hell.
- Game freezes that caused death (because the game itself kept running) and consequently lead to the loss of hardcore characters. The only way to protect one from this was to find a party and stick together, and when someone stopped moving one came to the rescue. Imagine a bug where one could not die ... Now that would be truly lame. I will not miss them, but they were working on the bugs and showed it, though it could have been a bit more frequent. It is certainly no reason to end the game.
- Desynching ravengers. Everyone whoever lost a char to them speaks out their name with a tone of respect. When one thought one could handle the toughest monsters they, still, taught you the meaning of loss. Actually, the almost invisible rift chompers in Night Mare Mode were worse IMHO, and they were meant to be like this. In the end, it was just a bug.
- Stair traps. What was that again? Ah, I remember. People who forgot that they needed to go backwards in case the mob they encountered was too strong on entry into a map. Yet, some players complained about it because they just could not handle a set-back as the first action on a map. However, these complaints were really only caused by the next problem:
- Founders. I am not going to miss them. Not all of them but some actually thought they owned the entire game after paying the $150. Instead of being role models to others did they just complain and spread doubt and despair where ever possible, using their right of free speech to make everyone, including the developers, feel bad. They represented the very meaning of owned.
- flagshipped.com. I am going to miss it because I have still no clue what the hell is wrong with this guy.
There were other things in the game that I disliked but it settled it for me after writting about it in the suggestions forum. I did not expect the game to come to an end and I was looking forward to an enduring gaming experience. The game raised hell for real. It is hard to admit but this is what I will miss the most.

And that's not bad for a game so brain dead you could play it in a coma.
