A new Australian political party calling themselves the Gamers4Croydon has been founded with a single issue and with the sole purpose running a political candidate against the one man standing in the way of an R18+ implementation in the country’s censorship system.
Atkinson doesn’t believe that such ‘sick filth’ ought to be made available to the Australian public, because game developers can’t be expected to ‘be responsible by not glorifying terrorism’, among other issues, as if Australian adults are too stupid to make these decisions on their own.
David Doe, the founder of Gamers4Croydon believes that running against Atkinson (and winning) is the only way to give Australian gamers a rating system in line with other developed nations.
“The entire purpose of this site is to have the R18+ classification rating added to the ratings currently allowed for videogames in Australia,” said Doe.
“There a number of ways to do this, but the most straightforward is to place political pressure on the South Australian Attorney General, Michael Atkinson, as he is currently the only Attorney General voting 'no' on the issue of an R18+ rating for videogames. This is despite overwhelming evidence that the average age of gamers in Australia is 29 and above, and despite evidence that a majority of Australians support an R18+ rating for videogames.”
Gamers4Croydon is accepting volunteers and financial support at their official website.
Aussie gaming website games.on.net notes that defeating Atkinson will be an uphill battle, as he earned 76% of the vote during the last election.

With all of the globally negative press this censorship issue is getting I surely hope it's retracted, and the ideal R18+ goal pans out. With the massive following the R18+ movement is amassing I'm sure they'll be successful.
Trying to outright oust him seems like a pretty dumb way to go about it though. I mean we're talking about video games here people, not universal healthcare or a political scandal.

Surely the crux of the matter is that some games are designed for
adults and not for children. They shouldn't be modified in order to
make them available for children. They should be rated appropriately.
As
a parent, I would be absolutely unhappy with the current arrangement.
Superficial changes are made to adult games that are then released to
children? That's insane - and totally inadequate. Adult games are not
just "adult" because of the graphics or the swearing - adult games deal
with concepts and situations that children are not capable of
processing safely.
And its not just about games, its about limiting the rights of the many to cater to the few. "protecting children and vulnerable adults".

Couldn't agree more. Ten year old boys and girls aren't going out purchasing $300 dollar consoles and $60 dollar games. The parents are the ones providing the kids with the material and that is up to their own discretion.
Furthermore, as you said altering adult material to make it pass the standards of a "children's game" only hurts the gaming industry in my eyes. Movie and video game distributors are trying to make their products more accessible to a wider audience by working around these exact rating systems. It just makes for a poor quality product.
