Square Enix has announced its expansion of the world of Final Fantasy XI’s Vana’diel with not one, or two, but three new add-on scenarios across the year, presumably to keep the game’s subscribers sated until its successor, Final Fantasy XIV, is finally released.
The three add-ons, announced yesterday in a press release, are titled Vision of Abyssea, Scars of Abyssea, and Heroes of Abyssea and will carry a price tag of $9.95 each and require both Rise of the Zilart and Wings of the Goddess expansion packs for the game.
The first of the expansions, Vision of Abyssea, will be released in the summer for a simultaneous release in the US, Europe and Japan.
As for Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix also announced at the recent VanaFest 2010 in Tokyo that the beta test for the game will begin next week on March 11. Considering how close it is to release, you might just want to skip the FFXI expansions and cross your fingers for an XIV invite, instead.
You can sign up for it here. You'll need a Square Enix account to sign up, so be sure to create one, if you haven't already.
Square insists that those who do not receive an invite for the closed beta when it first begins will have nothing to fear, as "There will be other opportunities to come," beyond the first wave of invites, and that interested players should "Be sure to stay tuned!" in the weeks to come.

I played FF XI for three months and found it super annoying to have to adjust to turn-based action. After 3 years of playing D2, this FF's battle system just isn't for me.

@Talic FFXI isn't turn based, it's real time. The only real different is that it's designed to be playable without the use of a mouse.
Also, the beta isn't going to "start" on March 11th, that's just when the beta site is launched.

Sorry, maybe my wording was misleading. I'm not sure how to describe it but if you play FFXI and compare its battle mechanic with say Diablo or Hellgate:London then you might know what I meant. I couldn't stand waiting for my turn to attack in a full party game in FFXI. Don't you take turns regardless you'll miss or getting hit? I think Pokemon is sort of like this.

Not at all. It's pretty slow paced, but each weapon has a delay and you swing based on that delay. It's completely unrelated to if the enemy does anything or not.
