Allow me to introduce you to Brian Menze. If you're unfamiliar with the name, he’s the artist of the original Fallout “Vault Boy” characters that adorn the Fallout series in ubiquity. As of late, Menze’s been releasing a number of original artworks on his DeviantArt website.

Today, Menze released the original image for the Childkiller reputation in Fallout 2, which was never used in final version of the game that instead used the same Vault Boy graphic as the Hated reputation. How come?

Menze explains: “This image was unused and the only Vault Boy image to ever be cut from Fallout 2. (I'm sure you can figure out why) I remember when I got the request to do a perk illustration for "child Killer" that there would be no way to keep in from being offensive. I mean really! How do you make an illustration of "child killer" and keep it from being offensive? Anyway for some reason, I thought this was the least offensive way to do it. I have no idea what i was thinking. Even the designer who requested it realized it was a bad idea, so we nixed it. Looking back on it now, I can't believe I drew this.”

This is the image in question, which has since been removed from his website:

Childkiller

You can check out more of his artwork, which he’s produced for games like Alpha Protocol and Knights of the Old Republic II here.

Thanks, Ausir!

"I remember when I got the request to do a perk illustration for "child Killer" that there would be no way to keep in from being offensive. I mean really!"

How about a baby bottle with a skull and cross bones on it? It implies that there is poison in it but you don't even have to have a baby in the picture.

You could have renamed it "Childhood Killer" and had the icon be a picture of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull

He made 4 of 6 free throw attempts, so Popovich had to scrap that, too.
