Understandably, many concerned fans had good reason to be vocal about their complaints. Screenshots were scarce, and the new team in charge of the franchise had yet to prove themselves to fans anxious for a proper sequel almost a decade since the release of Diablo II.
Blizzard has since informed us that the use of a bright color spectrum in some of its screenshots is meant to specifically enhance the horror aspects of the game, creating a powerful visual contrast. Good answer.

:D that's brilliant. I hope they add something super colourful to the game, like the Cow Level. Unicorn Rainbow Land level?

OMG! THE SECRET UNICORN LEVEL!!
That's about the only thing I can think of that would possibly surpass the Cows

I dunno... Dungeon Siege had the rabid sheep level (or was it chickens... I forget.) and that was pretty cool.

Well, chickens and sheep are cool, but it's hard to make them intimidating.
Have you ever played Overlord? There's "Bloody Unicorns" in that, that crave human flesh, and skewer your minions on their horn. They're pretty cool.
Plus I'd love to hear them saying "Nay. Nay nay nay, nay, nay nay nay. NAAY!!!"

I think this would be freakin awesome. Specially if there was a boss named Charlie and the level was named Candy Mountain.

The colourful images were just outdoor areas. I felt the dungeon looked fine. You'd expect outdoors to be colourful in some places, it's not all doom and gloom Sanctuary.

You asked for unicorns?
Hmm. And here I was expecting the final boss to be a massive lolcat, which you must defeat with the Horadric Cheezburger.

This just gave some poor sod with limitless time an excellent idea for character skins.
No doubt, we'll all be downloading unicorn farting barbarian patches after the game release.
