The Diablo series and other games like it (Titan Quest, Mythos, Torchlight) were always confined to a fixed axonometric camera. With the exception of Mythos, which allowed for WASD controls, Diablo’s fixed view was always one of its greatest strengths as it allowed for the designers to map out locations, pace encounters and design set-piece boss battles based on the confines of the fixed perspective.
Blizzard representative Bashiok addressed the forum’s question regarding the fixed view in Diablo III.
It's a fixed camera. Back when we announced the game we had our dialogue interaction set up where the camera would zoom in, and you'd see the characters up close and they'd talk to each other in this zoomed in view. We threw that out a long time ago though just because it was too intrusive, it stopped the game, pulled you out of the action, and just felt like too much. There was also a point where we zoomed in on the character in one of the videos to show some attack animations and item switches better, but that's not a feature of the game.
The camera doesn't zoom or tilt or rotate, it's a fixed camera.
It's kind of fun to watch people that have never played a Diablo game before, or it's been a long time. They immediately go for the WASD keys, and when those do nothing they then try holding down the right mouse button to rotate the camera. Sometimes by accident they're reminded it's click to move.
It's just not a control scheme and camera angle that are used a lot these days, there's maybe been a handful of games in the past five years that qualify as isometric arpg's? So anyway, props to all those games and the developers keeping the style alive. We're continuing the tradition, proudly, because we feel it's the best way to present a sequel in the Diablo franchise.

Haha, the going for WASD-keys thing is true.
A friend came over a week ago while I was playing some Torchlight, he thought it looked interesting and wanted to try so he did and even though he have played good amount of diablo 2 in his days he went for the WASD keys. I was like, dude?.. what are you doing?. =)

fixed camera is awesome, also reminds me of ultima online.
however rotating camera can be done nicely, and no i'm not thinking of sacred cause that game is garbage (mostly cause of really bad animation smoothness, and combat skills repeatetly beeing interupted by enemies moving + that world is just 2 much humans)
however Darkstone managed to pull of the rotating camera off nicely + was a pretty good game. If someone hasn't tried it give it a go

I don't know... Torchlight seems to have implemented the 'zoom-with-scroll-wheel-and-middle-click-to-reset' option pretty well. Hopefully D3 comes with this functionality. The game is obviously going to be a work of art, and the option to view characters and the environs up close would be welcomed by all.
RELEASE THE GAME ALREADY, ADD ON NEW CHARACTERS LATER!

I just started playing Torchlight. I've never felt the need to use the zoom-in feature, but I did hit enter (or was it shift-enter) by accident once while in town (I don't know if this works outside of town, I didn't try), and it zoomed into a more-or-less first-person angle that showed the surrounding area. While the game was paused during this, it was neat to see.

I think oblivion's afk camera did the same, zoomed in real close. Was neat to be able to see the detail on all the gear you had, rather than just the back of them.

You can use the w, a, s and d keys in the game. Blizzard won't make you remove them from your keyboard.

Thanks for spreading misinformation, "darrrr", but keyboard controls like those don't work with Diablo 3.

darrrr didn't say you could use them for movement. He said you could use them. It was more a sarcastic remark. If nothing else, they can be used for typing.

I understand what Bashiok is saying about "continuing the tradition," but what's more important to me is that they're doing it simply because it's more practical to the gameplay experience itself.

Titan Quest allowed zooming and has mods that allow you to rotate the camera and adjust the angle so you can have the camera looking straight down or horizontally down from the character's POV. (But you'd better have a beefy computer...)

Yeah.. This game looks sweet, but I agree it needs the ability to pan and zoom.

What happened to options?
I don't mind them keeping the fixed camera tradition, as we know that's how the Diablo games worked... But why not have the options to enable camera rotation/zooming for a more 3D feel? I'm sure there are plenty of fans that would agree on this.
Options rock! Have the camera fixed by default, but an option to enable camera control would be an added bonus imo
