Bashiok has today been posting on the official Diablo 3 forums. Two questions popped up, one asking about the "focus like" item on the Wizards hand, which Bashiok reminded us is the offhand Orb.

The sort of plate-like gauntlets shown on her are part of the armor set look she was wearing. I think the "focus" you're talking about is actually an orb, which is a wizard-specific off hand item. You've got the idea right though, a lot of the wizard spell animations incorporate the orb into a sort of focusing element while casting. The electrocute and disintegrate videos show it pretty well - http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/wizard.xml

Another fan asked about how runes will affect items.

The new skill rune system is a clever idea to improve the customization and depth of characters. This system seems independent of actual wearable equipment and resembles the old +skill grand charms from Diablo 2. Good idea...

However, I am at a loss when I try to comprehend the logic behind using this system to replace the runes from Diablo 2. Before the days of Zod runes dropping at 1-in-40 million odds, rune hunting was a completely integral and signature part of the game. When I think of Diablo, one of the things I think about is runes.

The new system seems completely unrelated to the old runes in any way- why remove the old ones? The rune words added significant depth to a game centered around intense item creation and acquisition. Removing the old runes would reduce depth and omit one of the aspects that has truly defined Diablo

I think it's important not to mistake the word used for a system (in this case rune) for what the systems are actually accomplishing.

In Diablo II runes were used to augment weapons and essentially add more stats to them, runes in certain combinations would create runewords which were in essence more powerful than the sum of each individual rune. But remove the word rune, and you're looking at a system that simply upgrades items.

Similarly, runes in Diablo III, take away the word rune and we're looking at a system where skills and abilities can be altered to behave differently, simply increased in effectiveness, or some combination thereof.

Essentially what your question comes down to then is, where is the system in Diablo III that allows us to make base weapons more powerful? And that's a question that will have to be answered at a later time. ;\

------------------------------

In completely unrelated news, but mainly because I didn't want to make a separate news post for it, those of you still lingering on hope that Hellgate will come out again released by Hanbitsoft will have to be disappointed. Hanbitsoft has come out and stated that they hold no rights to the game outside of Asia (Something they haven't wanted to admit to until now).

Janelle Ha, HanbitSoft's global public relations manager, confirmed today that the company still does not have rights to the game outside Asia and has no intention of trying to change that situation. "I know there are many fans who are from US and Europe, who have many Hellgate inquiries," she wrote on Game Espresso. "You guys should contact the person in charge at Namco directly, you should be able to get the answers from them."

The answer from them, unfortunately, is a very distinct "no."

Oh well, guess we all expected that already.

HG:L, it's confirmed dead?! *chuckle* With the servers down and all the waves of hate against the game who can have hopes in a return?

I have moved on just the very next day and I moved on to EVE. Diablo 3 sounds nice but the hype and hopes around D3 already sucks. Why do people need to talk about a game they cannot yet play? Is there something like a fear of a bad game??

Things I'd like to know.

Heh yeah, it's just that some people still thought Hanbiton might revive it as they stated this a few times and released some press stuff in English with their new RedBana studio...

So yeah, this 100% confirms that it's dead for those that still had some hope :p

It's funny to see that Namco prefer to let a license die instead of giving it to someone else that is wishful of trying to make something with it. And all that on a whim, because Namco actually was not able to make money from it.

About Diablo III, I don't understand how people could ask things like "focus item" (also make me think HGL cabalist) or question about lack of weapon upgrade and the rune name used in a different manner. Not counting that rune in diabloII was a desperate act to add something to the game in the end and a thing that was initially totally out of the gameplay (in fact they work exactly like gems with different effect and the runeword option).
I like the Diablo III runes idea, a change in skill behavior is something new and fresh, I hope they'll do a good job on item upgrading/customization also.

If you can't make money from something, you're only going to sell it as a last resort. Why should someone else do it? This is the way of economy.

So you think that they have taken it just as emotional as the haters did? Killing it deliberately so no one can have it?

The rational approach would be to sell the dead asset to someone who finds it valuable and make money with it while one can. It's value does not appear to be increasing right now ;\

Nobody wants to buy it because the IP is of no value to anyone.

I want the IP. Seriously, I'd throw a kickass party, mainly for us former devoted fans. We could (figuratively spoken) light the IP on fire, invite the kids of the neighbourhood over and let 'em whack it with sticks.:D

I agree. But also Hanbitsoft has plans for it.
That's what I don't like about IP. Just the fact that you can sell that (splitting paternity from right to use it) is sick. Also you can freeze something for ages just because you don't want others to do something with it.

Not that I need HGL, but I think they just should let it go. If someone what to do something with it. Or else, release the source and the rights...

I just think that giving someone else a near-free chance of decreasing their dominance on the market is pointless from NAMCO's POV.

I agree, Helion. While it definitely doesn't make me a fan of Namco's, I can understand the logic behind keeping the promising IP to yourself. You don't want to give your competitors a handout.

Actually, "skill rune system" just sounds like what Blizz did recently with WotLK. In that expansion of WoW, players can now modify their spells with "Glyphs", so I am a bit underwhelmed concerning this whole "skill" take on Runes. Gimme my damn 'desperate act' runes and runewords back, those things were slick!

Oh hey, little insider info, but HanbitSoft only cares about the IP in Asia because they want to hawk their spoiled merchandise over to the Chinese and the Taiwanese for licensing fees who may or may not know better. Thankfully, they know better, so Hanbit's kinda screwed.

Prolly enough Industry people in Taiwan and China were beta testers who already saw which way the wind was blowing. ;P

Oh I looooove makin' my Ith El Eth Malice melee weapons. Runewords are smexy. But Runes are now Charms eh? Huh... seems like an odd choice. I rather like weapon customization, and loved how you could make runewords, or simply do a combo of runes, gems and jewels for your own custom effect, why ruin that kind of fun?
