Diablo 2

For those of you anxiously awaiting patch 1.13 for Diablo 2, Bashiok just announced a feature that might give us some more insight into how Diablo 3 will handle re-specs.

Skill tree re-specialization is currently a planned feature for the Diablo II 1.13 patch, yes.

So this means we'll get to at least have a preview of how the new team wants to handle this once D3 is out. Further news of the patch delay was posted by Bashiok.

The Warcraft III patch has been released but in order to resolve some persistent issues work is not yet moving to the Diablo II patch. Again this involves some very high priority issues that need to be resolved before work can continue on D2 1.13.

We'll keep you updated as work progresses.

How do you guys feel about re-specs?

Personally I think they can make the replayability go down a fair bit unless some harsh penalties are in place for how they are used, or some way of limiting when players can use them.

Source. Thanks to DiabloFans for the find.

Update: Bashiok had the following to say in the thread on re-specs:

There will be an easily accessed but very limited way characters will have access to respecs, and another way ...

Although the respecs take away from replayablity, it definetly helps people who spec'd horrible without knowing (like myself) and didn't really care/realize till 80s and don't feel like doing it all again with the same class.

When a game first comes out, respecs make sense to appeal to a broader base of users, but for a game like Diablo II, that's been out for years and still has such a huge following, I don't think it matters so much. Then again, this might actually persuade me to get back into it since I have less time these days and respecs would be a boon for me.

Replayablity from no respec is a cheap earned one and totally not worth. No respec was indeed one of the design flaws in DII and I wish it will be fixed. Also a not near perfect game could never allow no respec, that would be ipocrit. It's implict and obvious that respec should not be an easy thing, there should be balance between player punishment for a not throuthfully warned by the game mistake and avoiding frustration.

It varies from game to game nowadays. But I would say respeccing is necessary, but needs to be limited sometimes depending on the game. As a new player you could feel like you wasted a level if you put your points in a skill/ability you do not like and cannot redistribute it. Titan Quest did skill points nicely, you could redistribute a single skill point at a small cost. The cost got larger with each skill point you decided to move. It helped prevent freely changing your entire class build back and forth to suit the situation, but allowed you to experiment and ultimately choose a playstyle for your class.

The hardcore gamer excuse that you should research the game machanics outside the game is utter bull**** by the way. A successful and well developed game needs to educate the player as much as possible within the game and its design. Sacred 2 was a failure in this aspect as many of the skills and abilities did not properly describe what they do and some became completely useless in the endgame. And it has no respec option in the game even though it gives 100+ hours of gameplay if you decide to play on the higher difficulties.

Respec is short for respecialize.

I did not know what "respec" was at first either till I read carefully what previous posts where saying.
In a nutshell, to reconfig your ablities to your liking, to be able to change them around, or transform and roll out so you can go faster.

So... basically volatile skill points?

I don't think you know what 'volatile' means.

Respec my stat points is what is needed, not so much the skill tree. I can always look up a tutorial on what skills to put my points into, even if I dont have the gear. Its the stat points that need to have the respec feature.

1) Cookie cutter builds are boring. 2) What happens when a patch comes out and skills are changed? 3) We shouldn't be punished for experimentation in skills. We should be able to try every skill out and if it sucks we shouldn't have to delete our lvl 70 char. The fix to this is to make every skill good but how often does that happen? Also, even if every skill is good, some skills work better with others.

Respeccing your stats would be a very very irresponsible move on Blizzard's part. With items such as Enigma, Breath of the Dying, Hellfire Torches and other major stat boosters later on in the game, it would make it far too easy to redistribute all your points into Vitality once you reached the specified level and didnt need strength anymore. This would solve the issue of leveling up in the game, but with it being so easy to rush a character and power level them, this would be a needless feature.

I suppose one could argue that it would help to steer away from rushing and encourage people to actually play through the game again, but when most people who play the game are so focused on just getting to the level needed to use their new armor/weapon or PvP endlessly, there's really no actual need.

The respec option, although a nice thought, I do believe would be a rather unimpressive feature for Diablo II. The gameplay just doesnt really work well with it.

People already save stats until they can put +stat items on. It will happen one way or another why not make it easy on us so that we can have FUN? At first I didn't like hearing that D3 won't allow custom stats but now I really don't care. I don't miss waiting till I can wear +stat items to wear all of my gear.
