Modern Warfare 2

UPDATE: This story is retracted as certain facts of the report within can't be verified outside of the Russian blog I referenced. The site which I referenced, GotPS3, does not cite any external sources and the content of the report is largely the result of speculation, not verifiable fact.

Every copy of the console version of Modern Warfare 2 has been recalled from stores in Russia due to the content of the “No Russian” mission, better known as the controversial airport massacre level. Likewise, Infinity Ward has released an official patch for the PC and Steam versions of Modern Warfare 2, entirely removing the mission from the game.

Pending validation from the Russian government, the censored console versions of the game are expected to be released within less than a month, with the mission removed.

The game’s content has raised the ire of the Russian gaming public as well as a number of politicians who object to its portrayal of Russia’s armed forces as terrorists who invade the United States and subsequently erect statues of dead terrorists in Washington D.C.

Russian gaming website GotPS3 voiced their anger over the game’s storyline, which they criticized as catering to a primarily American audience with total disregard towards other cultures, especially the Russians, whom the game depicts as terrorists.

As it is, Russian gamers who wish to play the game will have to choose from purchasing the gutted Steam version, ordering the US/EU version of Modern Warfare 2 from eBay, or waiting for an indefinite period of time for the censored version to be released, pending validation.

Thanks, Warrax, for providing a Russian source.

We've never had a problem with Russia... It was the Soviet Union that was the problem.. and that is gone now!

Wouldn't it be "China is the new Russia"? Because of the Cold War and etc.?
Anyway, while i think the russian government overreacted, the "catering to a primarily American audience with total disregard towards other cultures" part is spot-on. Really, it's a game made in USA, for people in the USA. They really thought they'd give a crap about other cultures?

I dont hear anyone complaining about terrorism in the movies!  No depiction in games but lets bring some terrorists into the US so they can stand trial!  What a bunch of f**king sh*t!

Karma's a *****, but that's what you get, Infinity Ward. Maybe next time you'll make a real game and port it over to the console for the fanboys, instead of vice versa.

Does Russia so quickly forget about people like Stalin that hailed from their country. And for that matter, anyone who will take a moment to look in text books will know that Russia, is on par with Germany for having a history of radicals that lead to the terrorizing of other countries. The CCCP (USSR) were bad people, quite bad people. How do you think Poland felt with Russia trying to add it to their landmass on the right, and Germany on the left trying to do the same thing. Get a clue Russia.

This just in: Switzerland doesn't care one way or another.

I never said modern Russians should see themselves as terrorist. My point was that Russia has had a history of some bad people who did bad things. Which is fact. Then I compared "bad Russians" to "bad Germans". Which is a valid point considering that those countries committed heinous acts against innocents. So, in looking into the past, it isn't that far off to say modern Russians (or anyone for that matter) could be made into villains in a fictional video game.

Shell we look at the American, British and French as well along with dozens of other nations and there genocides. Yes what about millions of native people killed and entire cultures wiped out by the American or the more recent american genocide of Philippians and Serbs.

as Tod already mentioned, should we look at americans as ex slavers, people who brought genocide to a whole NATIONS (of native indians) should we look upon europeans as ex slavers, colonizators?

why not portrait then as such?

I don't totally disagree with the points made by Tod. As for as why they aren't portrayed as such, you'd have to ask developers. Consumers don't have that type of control of games and how they are made.
