Civilization 5

The latest iteration of Sid Meier’s decades old Civilization franchise has just been announced via business wire. Set to be published by 2K Games and created by Sid Meier’s Firaxis Games company, Civilization V will be developed exclusively for the PC.

A press release with full details can be read after the jump.

NEW YORK, Feb 18, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (TTWO 9.58, -0.08, -0.83%) , today announced that Sid Meier's Civilization(R) V, the newest entry from the genre-defining strategy-based franchise, is currently in development at Firaxis Games for PC. Civilization V reinvigorates the classic turn-based strategy genre with an astonishing new engine built from the ground-up for this flagship edition of the Civilization franchise. Players are introduced to an entirely new combat system, deeper diplomatic interactions and a cavalcade of expanded features that deliver a fully immersive experience providing hours of entertainment as players build and defend their empire on their quest to become the greatest ruler the world has ever known.

Civilization V takes this definitive strategy game series in new directions with the introduction of hexagon tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire. The brand new engine orchestrates a spectacular visual experience that brings players closer to the Civ experience than ever, featuring fully animated leaders interacting with players from a screen-filling diplomatic scene and speaking in their native language for the first time. Wars between empires feel massive as armies dominate the landscape, and combat is more exciting and intense than ever before. The addition of ranged bombardment allows players to fire weapons from behind the front lines, challenging players to develop clever new strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield. In addition to the new gameplay features debuting in Civilization V, an extensive suite of community, modding and multiplayer elements will also make an appearance.

"Sid Meier's Civilization franchise has been recognized as one of the greatest PC game franchises of all time with millions of units sold worldwide," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "Civilization V takes the franchise further by offering players a more immersive experience with deeper strategies; heightened tactical combat; vast, realistic landscapes to explore, battle over and claim as their own; and an in-game community hub where Civ fans can share content and compete against each other without leaving the game. This marks a new era that will forever change the franchise responsible for sleep deprivation and reduced productivity for nearly two decades."

"Each new version of Civilization presents exciting challenges for our team," said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. "Thankfully, ideas on how to bring new and fun experiences to Civ players never seem to stop flowing. From fully animated leaders and realistic landscapes, new combat tactics, expanded diplomacy and shared mods, we're excited for players to see the new vision our team at Firaxis has brought to the series."

In addition to Civilization V, Firaxis Games is also currently developing Sid Meier's Civilization(R) Network(TM), a Civ game for Facebook. With Sid Meier leading design, Civilization Network will offer yet another option for world domination to both the casual gamer and the biggest fans of the series. It's another way to access the famously addictive world of Civilization.

No version for the Mac? Really, Sid?
I have loved you more than family, I have deprived myself of sleep. I have neglected my family, all for you.
And now, not even a Mac version? When there are more Macintosh users than ever?
How could you do that to me?

Macs are good "premium" computers. You get what you pay for. Their greatest downfall is that computer game companies won't invest the money to port games to the Mac. If this wasn't the case, Macs would have a far larger market share. In the end it doesn't matter that much to me. I'll still get to play Civ 5 on my Mac since I have Windows installed on a partition.

So basically it's like an Alienware computer (premium) that comes with windows plus an operating system you wont use for anything except browsing the net and checking your email and maybe typing up a letter to your grandma?

And photography, and web design, and page layout, and music production, and movie editing, and basically anything and everything you can do on a PC, only smoother and without crashes.

So why pay more for an inferior product??

Ive been using windows for eight years and have had ONE significant problem.
Caused by me.

"So why pay more for an inferior product??"

That's exactly why I stopped buying a Windows computer.  I use my Mac the way _I_ want to and it doesn't crash.  I also don't have Windows installed on it either directly or virtualized, I see no point.  The system runs everything I want it to, and it's made me more productive than I ever was with a Windows desktop.  If Firaxis doesn't release a Civ 5 for it, that's fine by me, I won't buy it and I'll continue being more productive instead of wasting time playing a game.

Windows doesn't randomly "crash"... I've been running Windows 7 since the very first alpha build I got my hands on. It's never had a random "crash". I also own a mac laptop. It has frozen up and programs have crashed, seg faulted, etc. You are an idiot.

Just wanted to chime in.  I'm a photographer and live in photo programs.  I used to be on a G5 powermac for 4 years and recently switched to windows.  Windows has been a significantly better experience for photography, and I'm still waiting for my first crash.

Without crashes, my ass.  I was forced into using some Macbook Pros for video editing a while back and those horrid things were less stable than Windows 2000 when it first came out, which, if you're old enough to remember, was the buggiest vanilla platform ever to exist.

nice one there, but ofc i'm talking about smac OS its good i suppose if you are a retard, just going between programs, but if you want to go deep and customize things then you are tied, might as well buy a console as a mac

Dude, Bootcamp works well with macs for running Windows games.  I use it to run MW2 and the APB beta on a 9400m and both run well.

People still use Windows?
You sound like every other mac fan***. Yeah, MOST people use windows, because it "just works". And it happens to work a hell of a lot faster and better than MAC. Why do you think 99% of software developers write code exclusively for Windows ?

Go ahead and quote an apple commercial. I'm waiting...

Its like this.

Mac's appeal to the application-biased crowd.   It is for those that prefer the OS and software to just "play nice" and are not interested in having to manage it.  However, that ease of use comes with a price tag, and its pretty hefty.

Windows appeals to the user that wants control.   They like building and maintaining their systems, and they like access to every software release available.

Its the difference between someone who buys a new car and then takes it to the dealership for repairs (it just works)  and someone that restores an older car and works out of their garage.

As someone that works in IT, I prefer Windows, as I am a gamer and enjoy building my own systems.   My brother works in sound design, and he loves his Mac.  Both work best for our personal preference, and neither of us would ever consider using the other product.  There is no such thing as "better" and that is what none of the fan boys seem to get.

I took "developed exclusively for the PC" to mean that there wasn't going to be a console (XBox 360, PS3, etc) version, not that there wasn't going to be a Mac version.  Whether or not there's a Mac version usually depends on whether or not one of the porting companies (such as Aspyr) think there's money to be made in it.

I refer to the experience of working with a Mac.

I work with Windows every day [not on weekends though]. It is enough to cry an ocean of tears to the suffering of Man. If Windows was the only system available I would not have a computer. I'd much rather have nothing than to have to use Windows.

My original post [which was not intended to start a holy war] was for the fact that it is trivially easy for developers to develop for both platforms. I don't accept that an outfit like Firaxis would not have the expertise to develop a Mac version. Also, there are now way more Apple users than a few years ago. From a perspective of potential customers that should be a lot more attractive.

I'm not going to use BootCamp to install Windows. If I had wanted a Windows machine I would have bought one. They're not hard to find. I have worked with Windows far too long for my own good. After all that misery, being interrogated at Guantanamo Bay Naval Station is a vacation compared to using Windows.

In my kind of hell I would give you what you want (with a twist): you'd be working with Windows Me for all eternity. Does that sound like an appealing proposition to you?

Are you utterly computer illiterate?  Perhaps over the age of 70?  Windows only has major problems if you, the user, screw with it in damaging ways.  If you let Windows do its update thing and don't go deleting random DLLs from the Windows root directory, it's a fine OS.

Mac's are ******* ridiculous. Their whole argument for being better than Windows is that it's easier to use. I've never had a problem with Windows that I didn't make happen. Stop being one of those "I'm a Mac; I'm a retard" type of guy and grow up. There is a reason why Windows rules the market.

Because no one can make money on a Windows OS... Also, Mac being superior to Windows for graphic creation is no longer an issue. If you want to pay more for a computer that does less in general (this is starting to blur, but the market dictates what game developers are willing to do) then go for it. You can always buy Windows and run it in boot camp.

Game developers generally don't touch the Mac for two reasons. Not as popular, and more difficult to port to. Think about it, if a company is creating a game for the Xbox 360, it takes very little to port it to Windows or vice versa. Then there is the PS3. They really don't want to port it yet again to something else. This may change someday.

Interesting they wont do a mac version, one of the really solid games for the platform.  I guess Blizzard is going to be the only developer that can be counted on releasing games in dual OS format.

I just love all the free advertising created by the mac vs. pc commentators, you guys should really go ask for a cheque from your respective corporate bosses.  Otherwise, you're donating your time only to benefit two wildly popular and profitable companies.

Not that I'd ever buy such a locked down single-tasking computer, of course.
