This week's episode of Hellforge Hitpoints, featuring myself and Nichole “Snail” Ramos of Limit Break as its hosts concerns the topic of casual games with hardcore appeal. The terms of “casual” and “hardcore” are often debated to no end in the arena of public discussion, so this is our attempt to settle the issue once and for all.

What determines if a game is casual or hardcore? Feel free to chime in on the discussion in the comments below.

This week's music is the indie outfit Head Like A Kite featuring Asya of Smoosh with their awesome track, Noisy At The Circus. Don't forget to participate in our Likes contest this month, with two prizes up for grabs!

Gotta be honest with you guys. Felt like you went on for quite some time without really going any where when you were talking about casual vs. hardcore. I blame Sol really. Snail mentioned MMOs and that's like dangling a shiny set of keys in front of his face.

Got a good laugh at Snail reading word-for-word what I said though. Nice episode.

Oh, and Sol, now you agree with what I said? : P

"I said good day sir!" - ROFL!

Making money while doing nothing :-o What's that!?
Most ppl will say "Time is money", but doing nothing in that time and not make any money, that's rare...

Empire Total War:
I have a friend that loves that one, but yeah you really need to like the game to actually play it. Because it's complex, and has a learning curves.

WOW suck. EVE, now that is quality :)

Old gamers growing up with more responsibilities and having less and less time to play games... True :(
I used to say to other gamers I know, that you MAKE time to play games! :)
But the truth is, it becomes harder as time goes by to make that time to play...

The difference:
What Agamemnon said, I agree. But I also agree on how you guys described what the difference is between casual and hard core games.
The simple version is imo, a casual game can be a hard core game, and a hard core game can also be a casual game. It's all about how the player plays it.
Players playing a games 24/7 to become the master, might be sitting at a reception desk owning at making cakes. That's hard core! lol
Then there are players (like myself) that has a big variety in games, and doesn't focus all that much on one game, and plays many games casually and when they have time to play a game.
So I guess it's mostly all in the eye of the player :)

Time playing game:
My mom was also quite shocked last year when I told her that our clan would play pro comps ,and heard that we would practice 3-4 nights a week from 19:00 to 22:00-ish :P
I think she will faint if she should see my Xfire game stats lol.

very good insight Cleric

based on that, I would say the discussion is to identify the weighted balance between a game's attributes.

For instance, what makes a hardcore game is that you can't possibly play it casually and enjoy it.
A criteria that comes to mind is how much time it takes to evolve a character/dive into the story
-FF for example.

Punch Out is a 50/50 Casual - Hardcore. You can enjoy Glass Joe over and over, and eventually make it to Tyson and still enjoy yourself.  However if you put the time to grind in, you can really KO everyone quickly and rack up stars (learn the patterns & practice the responses versus react).

The Total Casual game = flash games.

mho~!~

Indeed.

Flash games would be the most common casual game, but I honestly can't remember when I last touched a flash game - lol
