Diablo III Dungeon Exit

Blizzard's community manager for Diablo III, Bashiok, recently talked about the aesthetic direction of dungeons in the upcoming Action RPG, who explained that the look and feel of every dungeon will vary depending on its importance.

"I think there's a nice juxtaposition between the larger more epic dungeons and the others that may be less epic but have very specific tones and themes associated with them. When you step inside one of the more epic dungeons, like the Tristram cathedral (and considering its past, shouldn't it be epic?) you immediately know you're somewhere important. Somewhere that looks and feels magical in its presentation and lighting, as opposed to, say... a cave. Still cool! Caves are still awesome, but you probably don't want magical purple and green lighting in a cave, it's probably going to have a much different feel.

That type of theming adds a lot to keeping the scenery changing and interesting. If you're just fighting demons against a grey or brown backdrop for hours and hours, days and days, maybe years and years... it gets boring. Interesting, themed, and contrasting scenery all help ensure visual longevity.

I think before too long we'll have shown a nice cross section of the dungeon types and looks. It's been too long staring at the one dungeon. Each one has a very unique look and feel, so it's really cool going in to each one and having a total change of scenery. It's all very exciting."

We assume that this means that adventurers will be given the 'red carpet treatment', one that no doubt consists of bloody corpses, the moment they step into the lair of a particularly nasty beast.

I don't want magical purple and green lighting in many places honestly.  Maybe it's having done lighting work in a theatre, but give me cold and warm colours any day, and leave the special ones for when there's special reasons for them.  I was really put off by the Barbarian video because of the green, and personallyhonestly, in the couple of places where it's brown with some warmth from lighting sources, I think it looks better.

Still, the actual environment design besides the colour is very nice (although they're hyperbolising your 'interaction with the environment': what we've seen thus far has all been very binary).

I think it's hard to speculate on how the game will feel until we all get a chance to play the whole thing ourselves, and see every aspect of it firsthand.  I know a lot of people have been disappointed with the environment in some of the screenshots/trailers, but people will always find something to complain about.  Looking at something and experiencing it yourself are two different things, and I have faith that Blizzard knows what they're doing.  The developers are no doubt Diablo2 fans themselves, so I'm sure they're going to make something everyone will like.

I think what Bashiok has said is pretty exciting.  Epic environments for epic places are always fun in games, and they make you feel as you should: like you're part of something big or you're standing somewhere amazing.

Soz for necroing this, but I thought I commented on this before...

I'd love to see the differences. Everything the same will get boring, he's right. It's not gona be like the rainbows and unicorns thing, but a slight artistic touch that is either noticeable consciously or unconsciously. +1 for that idea imo :)
