EVE Online
Being a gamer, I have played a lot of games and as such, I know what I am looking for in a game. Now, while attempting to find a good MMO to play, I usually find that quality is placed out of the window and dropped like a sack of rotten potatos.

Whenever you play an massively multiplayer game, there are always common elements which detract from the game, such as slow leveling pace, few customization options, limited character development, poor character control, massive grinding, limited classes, and the list goes on.

Why is it that many game developers ignore these ever so obvious game stoppers? I understand that every person is different and wants different things out of a game, but it really does not feel like there is a game out there for me when I run into these "problems".

A few games which I felt like took a step in the right direction are...

Ragnarok Online - This game is one of my favorite MMOs due to the vast customization available to your character, like the ability to modify stat points, job points and a wide variety of jobs that allows for many different character design combinations. Every character provides a different experience. 

World of Warcraft
- The vast and unique world made this game a fun place to play in. Having the two sides (Horde and Alliance) battle each other made real enemies out of real players, whose only crime was in rolling a character on the opposite side. Receiving constant updates, varied skills and unique equipment are but a few of the elements that made this game fun.

Final Fantasy XI - The job system in the game allows you to constantly mix your playstyle around, and giving you the opportunity to choose a sub job made it worthwhile to level up more than one class. The Kingdom System was a  passive way of bringing together people. One of the most unique things about FFXI was the auto-translate function, as it was a way to pick a phrase out of a list of words that will be translated in the players language.

Shin Megami Tensei Imagine : Megaten - This is a new MMO that arguably has potential to be a good game, provided that it undergoes proper development. The way the game is set up is similar to Dungeon Siege, in which you gain skill expertise by using your skills to attain better spells and attacks. Likewise, the demon system is a very interesting idea, which plays out like a more mature-themed game of Pokémon.

EVE Online -  The ability to train skills even while you are offline and being able to buy time cards for in-game money was innovative when it was first made available, and has proven to be very successful.


Of all the games that I have pointed out, only Megaten was released in the past year. My question is this: What happened to innovation?

Many MMO games rely on hooks to keep you playing. They might not be very enjoyable, but once you're hooked, you can't leave.

Ragnarok Online was only ever fun on private servers, anyway. The slow leveling and poor drop rates made it an incredible grind on the regular servers.

As for what happened to the market? WoW happened. Everyone else wanted to be like WoW and failed miserably at it. You just can't compete with it.

Most MMO developers justify the retarded decisions they make by pulling the ol' "this is an MMO and so it must exist" card. Like as if expecting quality customer support, ingenuous updates, and fun gameplay is nigh sacriligious to ask for. "No, you entitlist bastard, it doesn't work that way! Customer is always wrong!"

The thing is that an MMO has to be made HUGE. Big maps, large areas to explore. More quests than you can manage etc. This is where the problem comes in. With a non-MMO game, developers can concentrate on story line and all the nitty gritty details.

Unfortunately since a MMO has to work on the larger picture more than any other game, they tend to loose focus.

IMO the MMO's that will last are the ones that constantly update and add new options. Eventually, with many updates and tweeks, most MMO's will probably, eventually have more customisable options than what we can even wrap our heads round.

Like a big building. You need to have the frame before you can add all the detail :)

And yes, I know that there are MMO's that have done it right already, but remember to look at who the developer was. Money talks as well.

You are spending several million of your currency on an MMO.  Are you going to invest much that in something that breaks so much new ground that you have no idea if it will work or not?

MMO developers want to make money. Since a huge percentage of game players enjoy games like WoW, every MMO is going to be just as simplistic (for the most part). The game companies are never, EVER going to make a huge, complex, expensive game for the tiny percentage of players that would enjoy it.

I wonder how "tiny" the percentage really is.

I would also like to point out i did not say the game had to be complex, just it would have to be innovative and give updates that will give the most gameplay for the least amount of effort.

Look at EVE again. Look at their video's too. Look at the early video's and compare them with the recent ones... I think you'll get my point that EVE has made remarkable improvements in it's growing years in development and gained many advantages such as the graphics engine for one, and tons of content among others.
