Batman Arkham Asylum Wallpaper (scaled to 590x387) by ~HannesKinnunen

Once more the Blagonets is abuzz with inaccurate pro-DRM sentiment. This time it's not due to false reports that pirates were somehow responsible for bringing a game's servers to its knees (here's the real story), but rather an incorrect understanding (and incomplete reporting) of a developer's copy protection measures.

If you haven't heard about Eidos' “innovative” copy protection yet, basically pirates have found that Batman's Glide ability is deactivated at a critical point in the game and instead of gliding to safety he jumps right into a cloud of poisonous gas. Upon requesting technical support for the “bug” a pirate was given the following response:

The problem you have encountered is a hook in the copy protection, to catch out people who try and download cracked versions of the game for free.

It's not a bug in the game's code, it's a bug in your moral code.

Naturally, rather than thinking critically the sheep on the Internet yell a collective “Oh snap!” and laud the DRM as a much more creative solution than online activation and limited installs.

What few seem to notice is the little phrase hook in the copy protection. The question people should be asking is: So if this anti-piracy feature is just a hook, then what is the copy protection?

A quick Google and a few hours of sifting reveals that it's SecuROM, but Jason Walker who seems to be Head of Mastering on the game has stated: Yes disc based versions will use the disc for authentication, not PA.

Please note the very specific version of the game he's referring to. If you're planning on buying the game digitally (Steam, Direct2Drive) then it will make use of PA (SecuROM online activation). To be safe I'd wait for the third party guys that evaluate these things (whom I won't link to here for safety's sake) to vet the DRM when the PC disc/retail version goes on sale.

If the retail version really just uses a disc check and doesn't require online activation I might consider playing (and hence buyng) it. There's still the small matter of SecuROM's malware-like behaviour that I'd have to get over, though.

Someone was telling me about another game that did that, except it made you crash near the start of the game.  Unfortunately, a lot of people got the leaked edition and most of the game reviews included statements to the effect that the designers needed to fix their game because there were so many reports of the crash and marked it down on that account.

Yeah I remember the ex-CEO of Iron Lore blaming their foreclosure on piracy due to exactly this. I have it on pretty good authority, however, that the cracked version of TQ and the expansion, Immortal Throne, run just fine.

Yeah, I imagine once you cracked the released version it ran fine.  It was the pre-release leak - that everyone and their dog acquired (some reviewers included ha!) - that was built in with the crash that got everyone in a knot about supposed 'bad programming' and so forth.

Sure it is, but don't lose sight of what's powering that cleverness.

Great, so if the game mistakenly believes you don't legitimately own the game, it'll prevent you from progressing normally, and get you accused of pirating.  This sounds as bad as ARMA 2's copy-protection that would eventually prevent the player from playing the game, i.e. zero accuracy, turning you into a bird, etc.

I already had one game recently that wouldn't run cause it didn't believe I had a legit CD, even though it was a legit CD, and installed fine.  While the publisher/developer refused to acknowledge the problem (the community had numerous threads and reports of it confirming there was), and the only real solution was downloading an unofficial NO-CD patch to bypass the broken DRM.

I don't know if ARMA 2 had issues with their DRM.  However, it disturbs me when I buy games that I wont know if the game-related issues I'm facing anymore are intentional or not, and then having to figure out it's cause (DRM issue with a driver, software, or hardware) and it's solution.

I was planning to buy Batman:AA on Steam, but I don't buy games with SecuROM and similar DRM (as in anything that installs questionable drivers, rootkits and such). Too bad Steam doesn't have a feature to remind me when the 3rd party DRM is gone, I'll probably just miss Batman:AA altogether.
I find Steam DRM ok because it doesn't mess with the system overall. It fingerprints the executables and only rarely check the legitimacy online. I do think the Steam store sucks, also the ingame overlay should be better. The full price feels very unfair too, I only accept it because I don't have to deal with SecuROM.
