Two of the most influential first-person shooters in gaming history.

'Twas a great day in gaming
When the godfathers of gib
John Carmack and Romero did hack and ad-lib.
For they gave unto PCs +mlook in Quake
and changed forever the gaming landscape.

For many a moon all had their voice:
Consoles had Mario, Sonic, and Final Fantasy IV.
If strategy and shooter were your poison of choice
what better control than mouse and keyboard?

But alas! Alak!
This Golden Age of understanding was never to last
For consoles were simply uncontent with their lot.
What started as a strategy, became action game
And but one announcement later, Halo: Combat Evolved.

"lol consoletards need aimhacks built in,"
at Microsoft's Halo did the 1337 cadre jibe
and of the graceless, unwieldy, Xbox controller
there was much diatribe.
"It's clumsy and all-thumbs lol,"
did the Half-Life players joke
"We'll pwn u n00bs, aimhack and all."

Yes, yes, I know this is technically an expression of Half-Life 2 against Halo, but it was the most appropriate image I could find.

For many a year the game journos did implore
That consoles were now suitable for 'the core'
So many Xboxes and PS2s were bought,
But gaze upon what you have wrought:
Bonus points if you know where this is from.
More bonus points if you can figure out what's going on here.

Interfaces designed for controllers, mice are ignored,
Settings dumbed down for those easily bored
Server browsers, LAN games, fine-grained control
Chained to the altar of the conquering Console
"It's better this way," the new high priests assure.
"Developer consoles are a disease we must cure,
You don't need mods or LAN or any such part,"
And with a grin and a jerk they stab at the heart.

The PC First-Person Shooter is dead. Long live the Console Shooter.

Um... what? :<
As long as valve is around, I'll keep my chin up.
Although saying it's dead sounds very... crude. lol.

Off the top of my head, Valve and EA DICE (Battlefield) still somewhat carry the PC FPS torch. id Tech (Rage, Doom 4) is headed the same way is IW Engine 4.0 (Modern Warfare 2) and Unreal Engine 3 based games (specifically looking at UT3 which would arguably showcase as many of the features of the engine as possible) also seem to come with very few of the non-graphical features previous iterations of the engine had.

Even Valve's latest releases (Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2) don't really ship with decent LAN support. At least we still have dedicated servers, but there's still no server browser and the matchmaking system isn't always that great. If it weren't for the developer console I don't think there'd be a way to host or join a L4D/L4D2 game without an Internet connection.

Would you look at that, Source wins again despite my abject hatred of Steam. Go Valve! And thanks for the tip, Gprime.

Altho this can be argued, L4D/L4D2 worked out well somewhat because of the reason why it didnt have server browser out of the box. It really did simulate the whole bunch of strangers meeting up to survive experience, as well as allowing you to meet new e-friends.

I personally made a few from L4D, and ironically met with RL friend that i havent seen since gr3.

Source gave id Tech 4 real uphill. If memory serves, Source had better water (though this is a point we argued a lot), that automated facial animation tech, and much better scalability. Of course it was linked to Steam which completely ruined it for me.

id Tech 4 seemed to basically have awesome shadows but demanded a ridiculously powerful graphics card at the time. Now id Tech 5 is slated to not have dedicated server support. I wonder if it'll also have the crap LAN support of MW2. Not that anyone really buys id games nowadays for the multiplayer, of course.

Source's facial animation were indeed beautiful and the engine looked very nice.

However when it comes to fps engines looks are second and physics are first, and i didn't like the physics of it very much

Agree, Id's engines have been the superior physics, albeit lacking in graphics quality (Quake 4, looking at you)

Console tards are weak! Keyboard and mouse is just too much for them to handle.

NETSTORM! Man, that's where my online gaming began!:D
Just thinking about that takes me back :)

Good read. The age of console is an infestation, but like all infestations, it can be removed or controlled. Balance must be restored in the force!

You are no cure. You just prefer pc gaming. Also, consoles aren't aren't infestation. Many gamers have multiple platforms they like. Example, I have DragonAge on pc because I won't purchase an Xbox. I wouldn't waste my time with DragonAge on my PS3. At the same time, I wouldn't want to play games like NHL '10 or Streetfighter 4 on the pc.

Also, not to kick a dead horse, but when playing games with heavy competition such as shooters, I prefer the equal ground of consoles. I don't want to worry about someone with a built-for-gaming rig, where as my rig is a utility rig with an aging, yet still good 8800GT video card.

In closing, I did get a kick out of the original post. I don't bash people for being PC slappies don't bash people like me who play some games on a console.

Thanks Left4Kev, the aim of the poem was kicks :-D. And don't take it the wrong way... We're all just having some fun with hyperbole. Most of us believe that each platform has certain things it does well. In my opinion, a shooter is something best played with a mouse and keyboard. Cleric actually owns an Xbox which he uses basically exclusively for the Guitar Hero games.

And there's nothing wrong with an 8800GT! I recently upgraded to 8GB RAM from 2GB when I got Windows 7 and my trusty 8800 still serves me very well -- play almost everything on max (without AA, though L4D2 seems to be a bit jittery at 1920x1200 with max everything).

Problem with many of the multi platform games is that the interface on the pc will be shat all over.

Dragon age is one of the games that actually offers more on pc so its ok, but most games you just end up with a simple interface thats designed for kids.

I  think its fine you enjoy consoles, However its not fine that the existance of consoles makes pc games worse (which is obviously not directly your fault) How you can endure playing an fps with a controller i'll never understand though. Playing SF4 with an arcade stick is way more desirable than a keyboard though so it goes both ways

Bioware has generally been very good at this. They developed a different party command interface for Mass Effect on PC (but kept the same jank dialog interface, sadly) and Dragon Age definitely feels like a PC game rather than a port. A rarity in PC CRPGs lately.

Being the fan of the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale that I am, I wouldn't dream of playing DA:O on anything but the pc. But games like Left4Dead/2 I have to play on the pc because I will not purchase an Xbox360 . I don't mind, but I wouldn't want to play many other shooter games on the pc. (i have no problem acknowledging that I don't have great mouse skills for shooters.  Play me in CS:Source, lol)

Yeah, Bioware has had a great record as well as Looking Glass (now 2K Boston) with Bioshock and hiring a seperate company to focus just on the PC version. Unfortunately, these are two exceptions, not the rule though. With Dragon Age, it was supposed to be a PC exclusive, so that's why it feels like such a perfect PC game, it was only last year when EA decided to make it multiplatform, and then us PC peeps had our version delayed as well. It was actually done last winter on PC, but with EA's marketing push, they didn't want to straddle releases(makes sense from a Business point of view, sucks for us PC Gamers), unless of course the PC versions come later....

I actually really liked the new Wolf(single player content, multi not so much) , but the interface was built for a 360/PS3 pad all the way.

I would honeslty pay 60 to 70 bucks for a quality game that is built
for the PC, or at least given a completely separate interface to cater
to the mouse and keyboard. I'd even encourage it from the publishers. What I'm not in favor of is multiplatform 360 ports to PC like MW2, that play like a console game for 60 bucks.

Left4Kev,

I love my consoles too, for console games though. It's pretty hard to
deny that consoles haven't influenced Pubs/Devs into making shooters
cater to the gamepad, which has then bled into the PC space since our
preference in gaming doesn't sell as well. I see no problem with
sharing multiplats, so long the PC gets the proper attention for the
mouse and keyboard. I love all gaming , I have all systems, but I like
certain games for certain platforms.

This article isn't to put down consoles. I LOVE NHL10 on my 360, but
we're talking about FPS...which imo is still King on PC. As much as I
love my 52" Samsung (and large penis too), playing in a comfy chair,
close up surround sound or amazing headphones, mouse and keyboard
controls, customizing the way you like to play, is just not matched on
console. Consoles are great for chilling on the couch. I play a lot of
them too, but I'd rather play a game like NHL10 or Rockband/Guitar
Hero, Mario etc..chilling with buddies on consoles, and play
FPS/MMO/RTS on my Rig. I love arcade racers  on both PC and console,
and I use my 360 pad on my PC whenever I play them on PC instead of
console. Dirt 2 on PC is amazing, and well worth picking up, so long
you play it with a gamepad or wheel....Add to that my love for gaming
laptops, I use mine wherever I go and I travel a lot. Can't easily
bring your console around with ya, so it all works perfect when I don't
feel like just playing my PSP or DS on the road...Gaming laptops from
Gateway and Asus are now under a grand and easily affordable too that
will run everything out there perfectly.

BTW, as to your comment on competitive FPS on Console vs. PC, on PC,
almost ALL competitive players I know turn down their settings to
achieve the highest amount of FPS, which can be done on just about any
PC, especially including your current 8800GT in which I just upgraded
from. You would have NO disadvantage playing against someone with a
brand new 5870, competitively or even regularly. In fact, you don't
want eye candy when you are fragging for kills. Plus, all competitive
games aren't system hogs at all. Crysis is the only game that I know of
that is system draining, but you can turn down the settings and play
that competitively with your card no problem at all.

Either way , I hear ya, but I just wanted to add to your comments.....not flaming at all :)

******* depressing...the FPS scene has definitely changed.

Recently, Borderlands initial release on PC had an interface that i'd rather stab myself in the eye then play it, and was completely built for consoles, not to mention they told us we had to wait a week, and were promised all these PC exclusive features THAT NEVER MADE IT IN THE GAME, total BS. We need more Cysis and STALKER, and it looks like Europe is our only savior now on PC for FPS....Metro looks promising, I'm buying it regardless since it's a PC first type game.

I'll always buy the PC versions of FPS if they are multiplatform....I'd rather quit FPS's altogether than settle for thumbstick aiming....no thanks Publishers.
